warp_cordyceps pleaassseeeeee
This is for the Rogue Trader game section where Abel is caught by the Final Dawn in the Cenobium and they put a schismatical demon in him. Later there are also some tech-priests next to the reactor, also infected by schismaticals. They understand what is happening to them, lucid, but they are not in control of their hands. They tell RT this, that she should try to free them. Then I had a discussion with some cool people and we decided that schismatical is like cordyceps, a mushroom that takes control of insect host's muscles to make them give their bodies to be a substrate, but does not mess their mind much - the insect goes on with its life. For a bit.
Abel, however, is special. You are able to kick the demon out of him without any special tools or training to do it; thus, it follows that the demon was never completely in control. I was thinking why that might be, and I remembered that Abel's mind is distributed to Pasqal, Axiomantha et al. So, the demon could get some control, but not fully, because Abel could always somewhat escape his node and jump to converse with others, where demon had no access.
So here Abel tries to evade the schismatical, but can't quite escape:
“The Wall was always here,” said Paranoia. His mechadendrites gleamed in the light of the candles that lined the walls of his alcove. Abel could not gauge whether Paranoia truly believed his words or used them as mockery — Paranoia’s face was a fusion of cyber-eyes, motive mesh, vox, and respirator. Iron. No flesh. No readout. Abel touched his own still-biological forehead and cheeks, then made his native eyelid blink. The flesh obeyed without protest; he still had control. “The meat shall betray you one day.” Paranoia stuck his front end out of the frame as much as metal permitted and gave a clanky rasp that passed as a laugh. “You’d better be ready, little Abel.” Abel turned away and walked. Paranoia’s stark, loud taunts followed him until the heavy air drowned the sound and the vice loosened its hold on his temples and throat. He took in the texture beneath his bare hand — a pleasure of touch, a web of faint cracks overlaid on a scape of deeper crevices. He recognized crevice Delta 204; it ran westward and then slightly up, lapping at the alcove that contained Logic Binary. Logic One was asleep, her face buried in her sister’s bosom. Logic Zero raised her bloodless face from the torn parchment in her hands. “He made us endless, vast, so that our dread would be eternal,” she read from the parchment. “Have you heard any such nonsense before?” Logic One mumbled something in her sleep. Probably a “no,” Abel thought.
Of course, I could not just walk past binary Axiomantha LMAO.

fantasy AU where Paskal is the young, newly-crowned warrior king with grand dreams, Abel his beloved elder brother who abdicated the throne to become court mage, Nihil his chancellor, Axiomantha and Audacia his ministers, Tarzus the general of his armies and Demetz his spymaster

Amarnat as science ship crew: roles
working from the perspective of Stellaris
Paskal is team leader, and first on any away team. his axe has slain many novel space lifeforms. also deals in navigation and course-charting. cannot reveal at the time how often he gets to talk to aliens
Axiomantha is second in command, much less likely to be on an away team. her grasp of scientific knowledge is the widest, but she specializes in society research. liable to take the lead on archaeological digs and in deciphering heterofore-unknown alien languages
Audacia, who would have become Axiomantha's second body, is the crew's engineering specialist and in charge of keeping the instruments they need for exploration intact, promptly replaced and upgraded. unlike Axiomantha, very willing to enter combat [perhaps she feels her sister's smarter, and is trying to distinguish herself from her?]
Abel specializes in physics, and designs the ship's cybersecurity measures. he is the member who does not get on away teams unless safety is quite assured
Demetz operates the ship's comms and logs messages and discoveries. he's the guy to ask if something needs to be done 'off the record'. also busy anticipating threats and foolproofing the ship [the latter an unending effort, as these fools are very inventive]
Nihil maintains the ship. his is to repair, upgrade, retrofit. he is also the assistant in any scientific endeavor, not learned enough to be the specialist himself, and unofficial person to argue points to: he checks over Xio, Audie and Abel's conclusions. additionally, Nihil is frequently on away teams [if he gets the same burn injury and gets benched for a while, his mates may rue his absence while wading through a swamp on xenogeological missions]
Tarzus would be the political officer in a more tyrannical space polity. aside or without that, he's the quartermaster and in charge of repairing equipment. interested in fighting stuff.
Haneumann siblings and stars
if Nihil gets a free star motif by having a name so close to Nihal, then I suppose his less cool siblings could get them too
Axiomantha - Xi Ophiuchi
Tarzus - Tarazed
Demetz - Deneb
Abel - Beid
Paskal - Phact
Amarnat and their followers as science ship crew in a different 'verse
SquidgeWorld Archive, a project of Squidge.org based on open-source code from the OTW
in a seemingly-happier world, the Amarnat is a science ship, and the Haneumann siblings its crew.
