From a Doylist standpoint, the Tau are kind of a metatextual joke. In most sci-fi like Babylon 5, Stargate, or Halo it’s humans from earth who go from cavemen to starships while the space aliens stay technologically and culturally stagnant, but in Warhammer 40,000 it’s the humans from earth who are the ancient decadent space empire and other younger races are inevitably going to overtake them.

Since the Tau fill the “humans” role in the scifi race archetypes for WH40K, it’d be neat if the Demiurge faction of the Leagues of Votann were like the Star Trek Enterprise-era Vulcans to them. The older more advanced race who know how the interstellar politics games are played and can offer guidance.

Don't get me wrong, the Demiurg are an interesting faction within the T'au Empire, but the original Squats deserve their return, and I would love if they would work as a true Good Rebel Faction.

The leagues of votann and the demiurg seem to be different entities, but they know of each other and even trade.

Speculation: lore

The leagues of votann are planet bound kin, while the demiurg are space bound kin.

The demiurg are survivor's of the tyranid attack. They fled in their stronghold ships when they were unable to withstand the hive fleet.

The planetary based kin were able to stop the hive fleet, but at a terrible cost. They have been rebuilding their strength and are only now venturing out into the wider galaxy.

Speculation: rules

If they're in the codex, the demiurg will have a special rule, hatred: tyranids.

They could also have a 'dogs of war' rule, this will allow them to be taken as an allied detachment in imperial armies, and also in Tau and Eldar armies.

The army will have at least one big mech unit, whom I shall call "Big Dave".

The Demiurg reside on the far Eastern Fringe of the Milky Way Galaxy and are also found less often deep in areas like the Ultima Segmentum. They are still an uncommon sight in the Imperium, despite the number of sightings of them having increased over recent centuries. They are almost purely space-borne in their massive and majestic commerce vessels. Their history is unconfirmed, as are their origins, intentions and current threat to others. All that is known about them is speculative at best.

The Demiurg are known to have an alliance with the T'au, serving as economic allies of the T'au Empire. They were initially introduced to the T'au via their mutual relations with the Kroot. From the Demiurg, the T'au acquired their knowledge of Ion Cannon technology, which is now used heavily by the T'au in their armies and fleets. Two Brotherhoods of Demiurg, the Srry'Tok and Thurm, are known to have joined the T'au Empire outright.

I didn't know these guys untill I saw some their spaceships in a picture...So I decided to draw some of their kin while I'm going some Tau Empire stuff in these days. As many things Games Workshop don't give references about other xenos (And I like it so I can imagine from myself them). So basically a bit of hobbits+gremlins+Yoda+dwarfs...
