International Day of Democracy is observed annually on September 15 to raise public awareness about democracy. The significance of the International Day of Democracy is to provide an opportunity for people to participate in democracy and urges the government to respect the rights of people. Sustainable development of democracy is important which should be done by citizens and government both for a peaceful future. The International Day of Democracy is celebrated to address the rights of citizens and to reinforce the goals of humanity. Many people and organizations worldwide, including government agencies and non-government organizations, hold various initiatives to promote democracy on the International Day of Democracy. We are all aware of the term “democracy” which means government for the people, by the people, and of the people but we sometimes ignore how democracy gives us human rights and protections. It is the bridge between the political class and civil society and gives us the responsibility to rule. The Theme for the 2020 International Day of Democracy is “COVID-19: A Spotlight on Democracy”. The unprecedented COVID-19 crisis has resulted in major social, political, and legal challenges globally. As states around the world adopt emergency measures to address the crisis, they must continue to uphold the rule of law, protect and respect international standards and basic principles of legality, and the right to access justice, remedies and due process. “As the world confronts COVID-19, democracy is crucial in ensuring the free flow of information, participation in decision-making and accountability for the response to the pandemic.” – United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres @undp @ndidemocracy @inecnigeria @unescoabuja @unwomen #democracyday #democracyday2020 https://www.instagram.com/p/CFJwzWiAdwT/?igshid=o91xiacmxyqm
