Supernatural is crazy because (in my opinion) the first three seasons are the best. I think the episodes and storylines are better. The costuming and the overall vibe is better. I also think Jared’s acting is much better in the early seasons. (Again in my own opinion). Except I like the characters introduced past season 3 much better. (Other than Sam and Dean). Cas is my favorite character. I love Charlie, Gabriel, Jody, Donna, Garth, Kevin, Rowena, Crowley, Eileen ect. The characters are really the only reason I kept watching the show. I’m not a big fan of the characters from seasons 1-3. I hate John Winchester. Joe got on my nerves, Ellen was alright, and I hate Meg. There was Bella who did slightly get on my nerves. (And that was kind of the point) However I do think if they hadn’t killed Bella off so soon and actually did something more with her character I would have loved her. I also just I love Lauren Cohan and think she fit well in the series. A bit part of the problem with the characters from seasons 1-3 is the writers just not being able to write female characters. (IMO)

Summary:
Sam’s sounds aren't enough to muffle the telltale sound of a blade where Dean is. Both Sam and Meg quickly look in Dean’s direction, Dean staring straight ahead, stone faced. Meg considers her options; she could go over there, take the knife Dean was probably using to free himself, and then crawl back over to Sam for their fun.
Or she could just do this—
Meg shoves a hand out, and Dean is tossed across the room, taking a chunk of the post he was still connected to with him. He hits the stone wall with a solid THUNK noise, and while Meg doesn’t think she killed him, big brother is probably going to be unconscious for a good bit.
That’s fine. She wanted this moment all to herself anyway.
AKA that one scene in Shadows, when Meg was on Sam's lap, continued.
early seasons (and i mean 1 and 2 early) supernatural things i want to talk about since starting my rewatch:
- dean’s glaringly obvious and intense desire to stop hunting
- cassie. CASSIE.
- sam and john being more similar than anyone wants to admit
- monster of the week. duh.
- sams distinct fashion sense before it became a carbon copy of deans
- sam being a goody two-shoes to the outside world but the bad boy/black sheep of his family and dean being the bad boy/black sheep to the outside world and the goody two-shoes of his family
- GORDON WALKER
- subsequently: Deans obvious sexual tension with Gordon Walker
- the fans being the reason Jo got killed off. never forgiving you bitches for that.
- the way literally every character is named after someone working on the show LOL i spot a new character name in the credits every time
- deans connection to angels from episode fucking one
- how well they handled the demon blood/addiction storyline with sam. one of the greatest plotlines on the show truly.
- mary winchester before the character assassination
- Sam and Dean being estranged when the season begins. like yall they were ESTRANGED BEFORE THE SHOW BEGINS. granted it was only a few months of estrangement BUT IF JESS HADNT DIED IT WOULD HAVE STAYED THAT WAY.
- hot take: the fans being overly critical of john winchester (i hate him too, but some of yall make him actually genuinely heinously evil in fanfics. im still anti-john but holy shit he is not the most evil character on the show. he was in like six episodes.)
- did jared padalecki have a spray tan
- deans suicidal ideation appearing so so so early
- the diva that is pixie cut meg
- when yellow eyes was the big bad 😭😭😭
- the phenomenal lighting and color grading. its so gritty and early 2000s and dynamic and wonderful and amazing.
- AVA WILSON. and the other psychic kids but specifically her: easily one of the funniest side characters spn ever introduced. got a vision of sam dying in an explosion and tracks him down to warn him and when he believes her she calls HIM weird. icon.
- how tight the symbolism is as it builds up to the michael and lucifer vessel plotline later on in the show
Can't stop thinking about how happy cass got when he thought it was Meg who he saw in the empty and then they way his smile instantly drops when it was actually just the empty wearing her face
How anybody who watches “Goodbye Stranger” and thinks that Castiel has a romantic interest in Dean rather than Meg is beyond my comprehension. And what a missed opportunity for some real insight from Castiel into Sam about being attracted to a demonic being and maybe a little discussion or understanding.
It's interesting how knowing future events can influence how you see old episodes. There's so much to unpack in this one. Read below for my thoughts on the characters and motivations in this episode.
John Winchester: In his call with Sam we find out he knows what killed Mary and Jessica was a Demon. This is the first we know if it and it seems to me he's recently come into this knowledge. He specifically tells Sam that he can't be a part of this. Does he know Sam is on the demon's radar? Missouri told him back on Home that his boy has power, but later in the season, he admonishes them for not telling him about Sam's power. How much does he actually know?
Dean Winchester: We really see the conflict between Sam and Dean with Sam's question everything and Dean's obey everything personalities. But even Dean admits later on that he wishes he could be more like Sam in that regard. More importantly, we see that struggle to hold onto Sam when Sam decides to leave for California. You can see how much he doesn't want that and it lends itself beautifully to the notion that when first picking him up from Stanford, Dean stood outside his dorm for hours. Dean is very dependent on his family and with his Dad MIA, Sam's all he's got. However, he realizes that he needs to allow Sam his freedom and is willing to let him go. Was he so willing when Sam went to Stanford? I would say not simply because Dean's speech in Scarecrow surprised Sam.
Sam Winchester: This episode really cements Sam's motivations that carry through the entire series. When John calls, his focus is on getting revenge, hunting the demon that killed Jessica. He refuses to obey John and is frustrated by John's willingness to leave him out. He's also quite willing to leave Dean behind and go his own way. He's done this before when he went to Stanford, though that was for an independent, normal life. This time, it's for revenge. In the call with Dean in the bus station, though, Sam realizes that Dean's letting him go. He's given that autonomy from his family that I don't think he ever had before. It helps him realize what's actually important and we get this gem of a conversation with Sam embracing the hunting life for the very first time. He continues to embrace it throughout the entire series as long as Dean is with him.
(Because I'm terrible finding GIFs, I'll just put this in text, though if someone has it, please share!)
Dean: So, can I drop you off somewhere?
Sam: Nah, I think your stuck with me.
Dean: What made you change your mind?
Sam: Still wanna find Dad, and you're still a pain in the ass, but Jess and Mom, their both gone. Dad is God knows where, you and me, we're all that's left. So, uh, if we're gonna see this through, we're gonna do it together.
Bonus (for all you wincesties out there):
Dean: Hold me, Sam, that was beautiful.
Sam: You should be kissing my ass...
Final notes: This is our first introduction to Meg. She seemed to playing the long con, but her conversation at the end confused me because she talks about how she could 'take both of them out'. We know that's not what's supposed to happen, so I'm not entirely clear on her marching orders.
