Rando Demon Reaper

So this has nothing to do with my usual writings, I just felt like doing it since I had a little bit of time tonight. It was inspired by this post. Just 900-ish words. 

Btw, I’m really loving this. I hope you will too.

Warning: Mentions struggling with depression and some self-loathing.

Trista turned off the last of the lights in the living room and pulled out her lighter. She lit the candles piled on the coffee table – thirty in all – while reciting the incantation she’d found in her head. This was not the first time she’d gone digging through her grandmother’s old tome in the hopes of something to soothe her mood, but it was the first time she had tried something this advanced. The past few weeks had been especially hard, bouts of depression overwhelming her again and again. She was desperate with nowhere else to go.

The culmination of all the tiny flames gave off a surprising amount of heat, warming Trista's cheeks, but the pleasant sensation didn’t reach her heart. These feelings of emptiness were oppressive. Without the click of her little metal lighter, the house was completely silent, not even her bare feet made a sound as Trista placed the candles around the circle she had painted on the old linoleum floor. All five points of a star connected within the circle. She hoped it wouldn’t be a problem that the tips weren’t evenly spaced, art was never her forte.

She took a long, slow, deep breath and pulled the elastic from her hair. The spell demanded she be nude. Yes she was by herself, yes the curtains were drawn, yes the doors were locked, but it was still a little awkward. “It’s just my body,” she murmured, “nothing to be ashamed of.” With pair shaky hands she took off her dress, bra, and underwear, tossing them away. She knelt beside the candles, long dark hair brushing against her back. The sensation made her shiver.

Her words started out strong, clear, determined then started to falter, shrink, waver. Doubt crept up from her stomach, clawed onto her throat, and saturated her tongue. It wasn’t going to work. She knew it. She was going to be alone another night. She couldn’t stand the thought of it.

The last phrase of the chant came out as more of a sob, and she clasped her arms over her breasts the moment it was done. She felt so dumb. Why had she bothered to do this? Even if she had said all the words right, the demon probably still wouldn’t show. There wasn’t enough dark magic in the world to convince someone to spend some time with her – hellspawn or not. The air felt colder than ever in the empty house.

Then a mist began to bubble up from the center of the star that soon built into a thick black smoke. As it grew, ribbons of red sliced through the apparition, sending out flecks of crimson that glowed like embers. A breeze tore through the small room, whipping Trista’s hair around wildly. The mist continued to grow until it towered above her, but it was beginning to take shape, thickening and pulsing. With a noise that sounded eerily like a heavy sigh, the fog was blasted away, snuffing out the candle flames with it. Just before the darkness took away her sight, Trista saw a stark white mask.

It worked. She sat frozen in place, stunned and scared.

Someone snapped their fingers and all the wicks around Trista were lit again. Her eyes saw a set of gunmetal colored boots wrapped around a pair of thick claves first. They were covered in sharp edges and adorned with bright red details. They looked like eyes. As her gaze drifted upward, she couldn’t help but linger on the powerful thighs that were barely restrained by skin-tight black pants. The thick utility belt below his abdomen had vials of blood attached to it, some still bright red, others brown and crusty. His arms and chest were covered in armor in varying shades of grey. His claws glinted as the flames trembled. His cape rustled as he shifted into an imposing stance.

“You just going to sit there,” he growled, voice low and rumbling. Trista’s eyes darted to the mask. It was so pale compared to the rest of his ensemble, almost glowing in amidst the gloom. The shape was something of a mix between the skull of a man and the skull of a raven, locked in a permanent scowl.

“S-sorry,” she stammered.

His head swayed to the side as if he were rolling his eyes. “First time?”

“Yes,” Trista whimpered, blushing.

“Why did you summon me,” he boomed.

She cringed. The young woman wasn’t sure what she had been expecting – he was a demon after all – but this angry beast glaring down at her was not it.

“What do you want from me,” he asked again, more demanding this time.

“Honestly,” she said letting the sobs burst through her, “I could really use a hug.”

It was too quiet. She couldn’t bring herself to look up at him. Any minute now he was going to start laughing at her, mocking her. Why was she like this?! Why was she so pathetic and weak and disgusting?

With a soft whoosh, Trista was draped in a warm fabric, soft as fleece and dark as pitch. The demon lowered himself down in front of her and pulled his cape more tightly around her quivering shoulders. She looked over as a few candles glided away from her side, giving him a place to sit. His muscular arm wrapped around her.

“Me too,” he admitted softly. She leaned into the crook of his neck and wrapped herself around his torso, crying all the while. He held her tightly back, brushing her hair and rubbing her back. She’d never felt safer.
