Life-List Art #1: BBWD
Common Name: Black-bellied Whistling-Duck Species: Dendrocygna autumnalis fulgens
Description: A calm, social, dabbling duck Motto: Want corn, will travel.
Conservation: Least Concern Range: Mexico, the Caribbean, Central and South America; travels up eastern USA from Florida to Maine Habitat: Freshwater ponds, lakes, and wetlands surrounded by savannahs and open forests; occasionally mangrove swamps
Food: Grain, weeds, invertebrates, tadpoles, and anything that farmers scare up while harvesting the soil Breeding Info: Dual-parenting monogamy, cavity or ground-nesting, raising precocial independent chicks; occasionally dump the kids off with somebody else (brood parasites, sometimes) Sound: chip-peeeeeEEEEEE-che-che-ne
Life List Notes: Saw a flock of these guys in a water treatment plant in southern New Hampshire, all hanging out. I'd suggest going there, but they shut it down to birders a few years ago. Bummer, 'cause that place ruled.
Keeping my drawing muscles warm, as well as my bird brain, and felt the urge to draw a Black-bellied Whistling Duck! I'm also kinda tempted to keep making these as stickers to sell, so if people like this, lemme know, yeah? For now, though, gonna try to draw all the bird species I've seen in the wild!
