Greenies have a couple of useful advantages.

They dissolve in stomach acid and get soft when wet, so even if they are swallowed whole they will not cause an obstruction, unlike a bone. You just get a subsequent stool which is very, well, green.

They are softer than bones, so wont break teeth on them

Vegetable based so usually okay for pets with food allergies.

Ok for a cat on a bladder health diet to have up to 6 per day without influencing urine pH.

But they are a little softer than bones, so some pets will need to be given Greenies from a size or two above what you’d expect. I find them most useful for smaller dogs, or those that have issues with bones. You want them to be chewing on them for several minutes.

Also had a little luck with them for teething puppies, as they get sticky when they chew and sometimes get lucky dislodging retained deciduous teeth that haven’t quite managed to come out on their own.

That said, anything off the VOHC accepted products list is probably a reasonable bet. I’m also keen to see how Oravet chews perform, but haven’t used them myself much.

Dentastix, sold commonly in supermarkets over here, have been overall underwhelming and disappointing. They seem to help some dogs, but a lot of them just eat them in two bites and they’re gone. I still see a lot of dogs on them that I need to upgrade to some better dental products.
