Premise:

Earth has a Kyrptonian problem--warehouses filled with failed attempts to clone Superman and Superboy. Mars has an Earthling problem--cultural colonization of Mars’s deeply rigid caste-system. The young heroes of both worlds have a plan to address these problems (or perceived problems), a joint mission to Titan, the inhabitable moon of Saturn. Superman tasks his clone, Superboy, with forming a delegation with the purpose of building Titan Station, rehabilitate unstable clones, and to foster a safe exchange of culture between Earth, Mars, and the United Planets. However, the ancient indigenous sentients (other Martians?) of our solar system might have a thing or two to say about it. Amidst it all, the gods of Krypton stir. And how does Saturn Girl fit into all this?

does toothpaste exist for cats? I'm seeing some while looking up ways to help one of my kittens, and yet I don't think I saw any on the VOHC list you linked a while back. is this just a scam? also what should I expect about teeth growing in? anything to look out for?

Yes, there is toothpaste that works for cats. It's the same stuff as for dogs, just sometimes marketed different. That being said, the individual cat and dog pages on the VOHC site don't appear to be as updated as their full product chart. And there aren't a ton of toothpaste options it would seem. A lot of us recommend the enzymatic toothpaste from Virbac, which is the C.E.T. Some of their products are on the VOHC list but the toothpaste is not, and I honestly don't know why. One of my theories is that people generally want something easier than brushing, so it's less profitable to keep producing more toothpaste and getting it approved. There are a lot more water additives, sprays, powders, chews, etc that have been approved over the past few years.

Greenies have a couple of useful advantages.

They dissolve in stomach acid and get soft when wet, so even if they are swallowed whole they will not cause an obstruction, unlike a bone. You just get a subsequent stool which is very, well, green.

They are softer than bones, so wont break teeth on them

Vegetable based so usually okay for pets with food allergies.

Ok for a cat on a bladder health diet to have up to 6 per day without influencing urine pH.

But they are a little softer than bones, so some pets will need to be given Greenies from a size or two above what you’d expect. I find them most useful for smaller dogs, or those that have issues with bones. You want them to be chewing on them for several minutes.

Also had a little luck with them for teething puppies, as they get sticky when they chew and sometimes get lucky dislodging retained deciduous teeth that haven’t quite managed to come out on their own.

That said, anything off the VOHC accepted products list is probably a reasonable bet. I’m also keen to see how Oravet chews perform, but haven’t used them myself much.

Dentastix, sold commonly in supermarkets over here, have been overall underwhelming and disappointing. They seem to help some dogs, but a lot of them just eat them in two bites and they’re gone. I still see a lot of dogs on them that I need to upgrade to some better dental products.

hello! i recently started brushing my (3.5-year-old, 11 pound) cockapoo's teeth. my last dog lost hers around age 9-10, and i'm hoping to avoid that with this one since all her favorite things in life include ripping things apart with her teeth. my question is, is there anything i should be looking for to make sure i'm doing it right, or red flags that i might be doing it wrong? i have a little brush that fits over my finger, and an enzymatic toothpaste for dogs. i brush the outsides of her top and bottom teeth near the gums for about a minute each because that's what she tolerates, and then give her a treat. she's been great about the whole thing, and her breath is MUCH better, but i still worry about doing it wrong and having her lose her teeth anyway.

Unfortunately, while tooth brushing and feeding of VOHC approved diets/treats/water additives in addition to regular professional dental cleanings can certainly decrease dental disease and reduce the number of teeth that need to be removed, it largely comes down to genetics and facial shape as to whether teeth will need to be removed. Great job getting ahead of your dog’s dental health!

Genetic definitely play a role in the development of gingivitus, but there’s potentially viral aspects at play too. Cats can be a little bit complicated in that regard.

I don’t actually brush either of my cats’ teeth. That was never going to be possible with Wonka, so through his adulthood I put him onto a VOHC certified food for plaque and tartar, and just started Trash Bag on the same thing when he reached adulthood as it’s much simpler to feed both cats the same, since they try to steal from each other anyway.

And VOHC certified products will certainly help as claimed, so if it’s on the list it’s worth a go, though for maximum benefit they need to be fed every day.

Don’t worry too much about opening the jaw to brush their teeth. The side of the teeth that face the gums develop relatively little pathology compared to the side that face the lips, as the tongue is rough and mildly abrasive so has a mild brushing action anyway. Most of the extra dental care they need is on the lip side (buccal) of the tooth, which is handy because that’s the easier side for you to reach just by getting in under the lip. Sometimes using a microfiber fingercloth with a little pet toothpaste is easier to start with rather than a toothbrush.

Something is better than nothing, and if you can only brush the buccal side of the tooth and not the other, it’s still going to help. We only want a cat to keep its teeth for 20 years, not 80 like a human. We don’t need perfection, just function to keep these mouths comfortable and free of infection.

Wonka is almost 9 now, and has a little staining on his back teeth, but had never had any gingivitis or need for teeth to be removed. Whoops is about 18 and also never needed dental work, and she’s on a mix of the same VOHC certified dry food and cheap wet food. Dippa has needed dental work, but she’s had FORLS and nothing was going to prevent them.
