Lena tentatively knocks on the door to the study, peeking her head inside. She lets out a quiet sigh as she sees you hunched over your desk, bundled in a hoodie, too focused on work to even notice her. Her hands wrap around the mug of hot chocolate she had made for you, and she clears her throat. You look over your shoulder, offering her a tired smile as you see her, and she greets, “Hey.”
“Hey.” you say, and Lena makes her way over to you. You raise your eyebrows as Lena sets the mug down on your desk, and you ask, “Oh, you didn’t have to get me anything.”
“I made you hot chocolate,” Lena shrugs, leaning up against your table, and you can’t help but smile at the gesture. Leaning closer to you, she grins as she adds, “With marshmallows, of course.”
“Thanks, Lena,” you gently pull her in for a kiss, and you can feel Lena smiling against your lips. It’s been too long, she thinks, with both of you always being so busy with work, it feels as though you barely have time with one another. Moments like these remind Lena why she fell for you in the first place, and she wishes she could live in these moments forever.
But as you pull away, she’s reminded about how there are days where she wonders if you’re falling out of love.
“Are you coming to bed soon?” Lena asks, and she can see the hesitation in your expression. She frowns slightly, already anticipating your answer.
“Soon.” you vaguely respond, and Lena looks away. You reach for her hands, giving them a squeeze, and you say, “Lena, I’m sorry, but I just have so much work to finish before the end of the year.”
Lena nods, knowing she of all people should understand the stress of work. But she can’t help but feel tears sting her eyes, and she wants to tell you how much she misses you, how she feels like she’s competing with your work for your attention. She gets up, making her way out of the room, and your heart sinks as you know you’ve let her down.
“Lena,” you call out after her. She pauses in the doorway, turning around to face you, and you chew on your lip. Perhaps you should remind her that you still love her, or promise her that you’ll spend more time together another night. But for some reason, you fall short as you say, “I... thanks for the hot chocolate.”
Lena smiles slightly, nodding at you before she leaves, closing the door behind her. Letting out a heavy sigh, she makes her way back to the bedroom, her shoulders slumped at the though of another night alone.
