Book Review: SWIPE RIGHT FOR MURDER by Derek Milman
Aidan’s hook-up was a bit more than he bargained for. Alone in a swanky hotel in New York, Aidan gets wrapped up in a crime of epic proportions-- and the chaos is only beginning. Aidan isn’t who they think he is. He doesn’t know how to hack military drones, or why a murderous cult is so intent on keeping him around. But as the chase and confusion mounts, Aidan isn’t so sure this is just a case of mistaken identity. Something far more sinister and far more personal lurks underneath it all, and with no clear enemy or side to choose, he has to decide what the right move is...or risk total destruction.
Swipe Right for Murder, as the title suggests, is an intense thriller complete with the appropriate expectations: car chases, shootouts, and spine-chilling phone calls from anonymous numbers. But Derek Milman’s sophomore novel covers lots of ground beyond the guns and drugs and conspiracies. Aidan is a nuanced, firmly-in-the-gray-area type of guy-- he’s easy to root for, but also boasts incredible depths. This story, wrapped up in a tight, entertaining thriller, tackles the fallout of immense tragedy and uncertainty in a young man’s life, with a heavy emphasis on queer identity and history. Aidan has to fight for his life and make tough decisions, but he’s also forced to confront truths about himself and find a way to move on from his past. Swipe Right for Murder manages to be nail-biting, hilarious, and staggeringly emotional all at the same time.
