Only A Boy: Character Sketches

Florean Fortescue is fond of pinstripe waistcoats, and his robes take on a candy-colored brightness undercut by a frosted edge, accented by cool silvers and bronze, as if in soft homage to his Ravenclaw pride. He keeps a pair of vintage reading glasses tied to a phoenix feather core, has a permanent home in the inner right pocket of his waistcoat. 

He has chestnut brown eyes and humor written in the lines of his face. He looks mid-forties, about an inch shorter than Albus Dumbledore, with a nimble softness in his stature. There’s only so much Florean can do to detangle his curly dark hair streaked with grey, and he secretly likes the way it defies gravity. Plus, folks seemed to like this image of an eccentric ice cream flavor inventor. And with his still dark brown goatee, which he curled with his fingers in whimsical humor for the kids, had one amused muggle-born remark that he looked a bit like, “Willy Wonka’s evil twin or something.”

Florean had tapped his nose with a knowing smile, “Who’s the evil one, really?” and had given him an ice cream on the house. Not that he’d really known who Willy Wonka was, of course. Florean wondered if the man also constantly found ice cream stains on his clothing.

Writing Challenge

In 500 words or less, describe your childhood home. Try to make it as accurate as possible. Now, do it again, but write it in one of these ways: 1. As if it were the setting for a horror story. 2. As if it were in a fantasy world. 3. As if it were in a Steampunk universe. 4. As if you were a stranger, visiting. 5. As if you were from the past, trying to figure out the future. 6. As if you were an alien, trying to understand Earth. 7. As if you were a historian from the future, studying the past. Try to keep it "technically" accurate, and simply switch writing styles. (Ie. "Black shutters" vs. "Shutters, dark and gloomy, with bits of paint chipping at the edge, as if no one has touched them for decades.") If you want to take it a step farther, write a story based in the location of the second description you write. Who lives there? What kind of people are they?
