Are you accepting of all Steve ships or are there some you just CAN'T stand to save your life?

Huh. That’s a very good question!

I’m all aboard the ship-whatever-you-want train, but there’s definitely Steve pairings that I would read fic for and pairings that I certainly wouldn’t.

We all know I love Stannen, but I also have some interest in Stannie and Steve/Kurda (I swear it makes sense). 

No part of me likes Steve and Darren together, and I think that about rounds up the common pairings with him. I want nothing to do with that ship. Also, I never read Steve/OC fics; I just don’t generally like OCs as major characters, especially when they’re created to be love interests. I have read some Japanese fics with Steve/Crepsley, and it sort of freaks me out. I won’t rule that out completely though because I think it would be possible to take it to a very dark and interesting place if you had enough skill. 

I’m definitely open to new Steve ships, though! I haven’t seen him shipped with that many people.

Unpopular Opinions: Destinyshipping

When talking about shipping Steve with anyone, we must first acknowledge that Steve is needy. Not in general, of course- Steve is fiercely independent and essentially dictated the entire course of the war. Every single battle/encounter was on his terms. He’s cunning and resourceful and probably could have gotten just as far if he didn’t have the vampaneze backing him. But emotionally? He is desperately needy. Any ship with Steve will automatically revolve around Steve. It will never be equal and it will never be functional. I’ve waxed poetic about his inner turmoil and all the horrible no-good things that have happened to him, but he IS NOT and NEVER WILL BE a hurt little boy who breaks down into tears and clings to the first person who shows him affection. He is way beyond that point. Those moments will happen, undoubtedly, but they will be framed by jealousy, possessiveness, manipulation, projection, and objectification. So what does Steve need out of a partner? He needs absolute stability. He is unstable enough for both partners. He needs someone who is not emotional and will not react to his tantrums. His partner needs to be incredibly intelligent to keep up with him, and to avoid becoming nothing more than his doll. His partner must acknowledge that there is very little possibility of changing Steve. His partner must be a fully-formed person who can separate themselves from Steve so they don’t become him.

When talking about shipping Darren, one must first acknowledge that Darren is a sheep. He follows whoever he perceives to be the greatest authority, and he does not question. Any ship with Darren will take a backseat to the vampires, the war, and destiny. We’re not talking a collectivist mindset- that’s Gannen- Darren shifts his priorities, values, and morals according to whichever new authority he recognizes. When he recognized Kurda, he valued peace between the clans and reformation of vampire culture. Then when he recognized the vampire princes as higher than Kurda, he immediately discards all of the values he held during his friendship with Kurda and throws all of his energy into decimating the vampaneze, whether they personally harmed him or not. He even begins to do this with Steve. Steve is taking hostages? Okay I’ll do the same. Steve killed a little boy? Alright I guess I’ll follow suit. Steve recruits vampets? Vampirites. Darren has no identity of his own. So what does he need in a relationship? It could go two ways. Either he could have someone with the exact same priorities, or he could have someone strong enough to redirect those priorities by becoming his new authority figure.

 So destinyship. Does it work? When we look at these two characters’ needs, we can see that this ship would be disastrous. Steve needs stability. Darren shifts his entire value system every few years. Steve needs someone who will stay calm through his tantrums; Darren not only loses his shit when Steve loses his shit, but Darren has tantrums of his own as well. Darren isn’t exactly an Einstein, and he’s already proven easily manipulated by Steve. Darren refuses to properly acknowledge what Steve has become. He sees only the little boy, so all of Steve’s current actions seem to be the work of some faceless, flatly evil monster. He can’t see any nuances that make the current Steve a fully-formed, valid, albeit twisted, person. He will constantly see this Steve as a disease to be cured, not accepted as he is. Darren is not a fully-formed person. He cannot separate himself from Steve. He almost became Steve. By the end of book 11, he had no moral high ground left- they were both monsters. Opposites do not attract because these two are NOT diametrically opposed. They are too similar. They bring out the worst in each other and escalate each others’ flaws to deadly heights.  A relationship between these two wouldn’t even make it off the ground. You put them in a room together and they will rip each other to pieces. Steve with words, and Darren with his hands. No one wins. No one makes it out alive.

 Go ahead and ship destinyship; I’m not telling you not to. I can see why people would like it. I get it. But you will never, ever convince me that it could work.
