Why hello there!
I vote Jan Suk for the most adorable being on the planet.
Seriously. Like, look at him.
look at him
Well, I'm off to bed.
Goodnight, drifting-monster, detectivesuk, my-bloody-ear, toongal.
I have deep affection for each and every one of you.
I hope to see you all on the morrow.
OOC: Just gonna go ahead and ask for Johan on this one. OR ... Karl :) poor Karl. Always picked on, but I love him!
I like Karl, too. :3 But I'll do Johan as well. I like talking about him, anyway.
My perception toward Johan went through phases during my first watching of the series. Initially, he wasn't shown very often at all, so to me he seemed to be a force rather than an actual being of flesh and blood. He was like an act of nature, powerful, inevitable, and felt rather than perceived. In some ways, it felt as if he was one of the ancient Greek gods, an unseen power that played with humans as if they were pawns in some elaborate game. When episode 25 came along, and the episodes following it, suddenly Johan was being shown, in broad daylight, interacting with people. This made him, in some ways, more frightening to me than the unseen force he had seemed to be previously to these episodes - he was now palpable. In fact, upon seeing him in episodes 25 and 26, I actually felt a little sick to my stomach. Despite his appearance and interactions, he felt like something not of the world of humanity, like a being that shouldn't, by all rights, be in the realm of normal society. This phase is the one that sort of stuck with me, although I believe that it began to end during the moment that Johan fainted at the sight of the picture book in episode 33. Somehow, in that moment, he changed for me from an invincible deity-like monster to a person who could be affected by the world outside of his existence. He wasn't something that just came into being out of nothing - he was a human with a past, as yet unexplained at that point in the series. This event did not completely end my view of him as a monster, however. For the abundance of the rest of the series, I still saw him as something extremely powerful with more similarity to the boogie man than to, for instance, his sister. Which leads me to the final phase. This phase didn't begin at any specific point, really. I think it was fully fledged sometime after I ended the series, actually. At some point, I began to see Johan as a human being. I think, however, that there is a moment when I recognized how I really felt about him, and that moment is when he made this expression:
I felt like I had been literally punched in the gut. For a moment, I was actually out of breath. I know this sounds melodramatic, but when I saw this, I pictured him as a whole. What was he to me, when it came down to it? What effect had he had on me, at the end of the day, all of his moments in the series taken into account? To me, in the end, I realized that for almost the entirety of the series, Johan had seemed to me to be, more than anything else, simply unbearably sad. I don't say this in the sense that I think he's just a misunderstood person and thus should be excused for what he did. There is no excuse for that. What he did was horrible and cannot be simply wiped away. But, to me, Johan is the most profoundly sad being in existence. Most villains in stories take some sort of pleasure out of doing horrible things - quite a few are even gleeful about it. Although Johan does seem to enjoy the moment when he's "won", for instance when he asks the detective in episode 29 if he would like a drink, at the end of the day he is a sad, sad human being. But that's just how I view him.
As I've discussed in my Nina answer, I do ship Johan and Nina together in a romantic sense, but with extreme reservations. I think that, if Johan is to ever be happy, he will only be happy with the help of his sister. And I do think that their relationship goes beyond siblinghood. But such a relationship could go incredibly wrong with just one misstep.
As far as a non-romantic OTP goes, I do ship Johan with Tenma. Tenma is the only person in my mind that, other than Nina, has any hope of truly helping Johan. This is primarily because Johan does seem to respect Tenma, and Johan's respect is considerably hard to come by. Johan, of course, states that he sees Tenma as a father figure, however this could mean a lot of things because we have no idea what Johan's standards for a father figure could be. But presumably this at least means that Johan is, to a point, willing to take into consideration Tenma's views on things.
I wish that Johan had been able to actually sit down and talk with his sister. Or, I wish that more of their interaction had been shown. His relationship with his sister is absolutely fascinating to me, because he is so extremely devoted to her. What scenes are shown of them talking with each other make me hunger for more insight on their relationship.
As far as Karl goes...
He's a cool guy. Kind of silly, but nice. I love him, too.
Although I can't excuse him for snubbing Lotte.
... dick.
Grimmer (now you've made me curious with that last answer!)
Curiouser and curiouser!
Grimmer is by far one of my favorite characters. I love that he's able to transcend and, even more admirably so, learn from his past. And not only does he learn from it, he actively attempts to prevent what happened to him from happening to any other child. That is so wonderful. He's a character that, ever since I first saw him appear in the series, seemed remarkably human to me (whatever that means). He seemed like someone who was just so real. You don't get characters like that very often. It's not even that he seems especially realistic. It's just that sometimes I expect to see him walking down the street with that lanky stride of his, or sitting in the park near my house reading the newspaper with a faint, lopsided smile on his face. Although Nina is my favorite character, to me Grimmer is the most real character of the series.
I ship Grimmer with Tenma, as I discussed in the Tenma answer. They both have very similar values as well as active consciouses, and I just think they would work extremely well together as a couple. Plus, have you seen wolfgang-grimmer's interaction with drkenzotenma? THEY ARE SO SWEET I JUST
My non-romantic OTP for Grimmer is with Jan Suk. Again, it's all because of wolfgang-grimmer (and detectivesuk :] ). In regards to Suk, I think Grimmer works well for him as both a friend and as someone to look up to. Both of them are very idealistic, although I do think Grimmer probably has a more thought-out and detailed philosophy than Suk does, so they're able to meet on common ground regarding their value systems. It seems to me that Grimmer is the type that would enjoy not having to brood or think too much on things (as he likely does quite a bit already, I would imagine), and Suk would probably provide welcome distraction for him, as well as an outlet to vent to when needed. Suk is exactly the type of friend people like Grimmer, who sometimes think too much, need.
Hmm... again, like with the others, I don't really think I have an unpopular opinion on Grimmer. I think we all agree that he's amazing and probably gives great hugs.
I wish Grimmer hadn't died. I really do. I understand why Urusawa made that decision, and I respect his creative genius, but I can't help but yearn for Grimmer's return so that he could have that picnic with Tenma and drink that beer with Lunge. But I'm sorry, the question was what I wish would have happened. I wish that Grimmer's and Suk's interaction during the time that they were together had been shown some more, because it seemed like they spent quite a bit of time together that just wasn't shown.
And I wish the picnic had happened.
And the beer.
