///How I develop my comic book characters
Hi there! In this post I’m going to explain the process that I’m going through when developing characters for my comic book. I’m gonna use my character ‘Styx’ as an example along the whole post :)
//1 I anchor myself around the things I enjoy
I find it easier to anchor myself around the things I like. For this one character I wanna go for an camper/scout-ish kind of look since spending time in nature is one of my favourite activities. Implementing elements related to the subject that you choose is an extremely important aspect that you always wanna consider.
//2 I stop myself from overdoing it
You wanna give your characters some features(both body and clothing features) that describe their personality. You’ve got to think this through a little tho. No one will have the patience to ‘read’ the design of a character if it’s overwhelmingly detailed. One thing that can help, is limitting yourself in the design phase and consider if the elements that you’re implementing are really helping the readers understand the substance of the character or not
+TIP: I usually draw my characters in different day to day activities, This helps a lot with understandig the character’s personality/reactions.
//3 I usually base my characters on real people
This can help a lot in designing the character in all ways. 80% of my characters are based on my friends and people that I interact with. I feel like being genuine in developing a character is one of the most important things you wanna achieve and the easiest way of doing that is by describing the people that you already know and spend time with.
Here are some characters inspired by my friends’ appearances and personalities:)
TIP: Stay true to your characters and who you are as an individual and try expressing that in your work!
Finale tip: Hope for the best! haha
