2009 vs 2019 - art edition~ (My digital painting skills are hella rusty but let’s ignore that) Been wanting to do one of these art improvement challenges for a while and figured now’s as good a time as any. A character of mine from 2009, Devin Gray a.k.a. “The Prince of Ravens”. He’s definitely an accurate representation of the angsty edgelord I was, haha I think doing these kind of challenges is the best way to better your artistic morale. Some days I really feel like I’m artistically stagnant and that I’m not improving at all, so doing this really boosted my self-confidence, even when I was just starting on the drawing I thought; “wow I guess I don’t suck”. That isn’t to say that now I feel like this is the best I can do - far from it, I know I need to improve on some areas. Hell, I prefaced this whole thing with pointing out how my digital painting skills need some work lmao These challenges are also important to show others that everyone starts somewhere and people are seldom just “talented”, it’s really all about practice and how much work you put in to improve. Not to sound ungrateful, but it really does bug me when people say things like “you’re so talented!”, “I wish I was as talented as you!” and the classic; “I can only draw stick figures”. These kind of praises not only dismiss any hard work artists put into their craft, but also set a precedent that being good at art is something that you either have or you don’t. And that’s simply not true, anyone can get good. The main thing these two pieces have in common is: 1. how proud I was of the piece at the time, and 2. people called me “talented” at both of these points of my life. I’m gonna keep saying it; practice makes better. There’s no such thing as perfection, because artists (even the great ones) are always finding ways to improve. So keep practicing and thanks for coming to my TED Talk. (Also two different mediums because I actually didn’t start doing digital art seriously until 2010)

Devin Gray – Dirigo Rataplan II (Rataplan)

A cognate phrase, Dirigo Rataplan loosely translates from the Latin and French respectively to “I direct a drumming sound.” The latter word is also the name of Devin Gray’s new record label, this disc being the inaugural release on the same. Gray’s kept fast company over the course of his active career and this project is a direct reflection of that consistency from the roster on down. Trumpeter Dave Ballou, tenorist Ellery Eskelin and bassist Michael Formanek are each acknowledged masters on their instruments and strong musical personalities who exhibit their shared confidence through the deference and engagement they show toward Gray’s deceptively demanding designs.

The album is actually a sequel to the ensemble’s 2012 recorded debut on the Brooklyn-based Skirl label, delving into both Gray’s developments in the intervening half-decade as well as the resilient rapport that also informed the earlier effort. Ten pieces by the drummer tally together to less than hour of the music, but each one is rigged with an ample and admirable array of ideas. “Congruently” immediately illustrates the leader’s abilities at parsing meter with an alternating, loosely Latinate rhythm that is as variable and supple as breathing. The horns dance atop the shifting patterns of drums and bass, riding the harnessed energy like seasoned surfers shooting a curl.

“Rollin’ Thru Town” sets up an inverse dynamic with Gray pulling inward in a gravitational tug of staccato sticking as the tenor and trumpet phrase in overlapping increments. Formanek peppers the field with a cascade of slanted plucks before landing on a sauntering series of accents. Once again, time is malleable and multidirectional in a manner of constant movement. “Trends of Trending” pivots on another diagonal groove with Eskelin and Ballou harmonizing in and around a unified line and over into fleeting abstraction bulwarked by garrulous bass that steers the piece to an ardent, vamp-anchored end.

Gray’s composition titles are evocative and elliptical at once. “Texicate” trades mainly on a fluttering a chamber-like colloquy between the horns as bass and drums interject from the edges. “Quantum Cryptology” echoes its appellation through a series of micro-gestures between component groupings. Ballou states a motif backed by Formanek before falling away to leave the bassist and Eskelin to an intimate dialogue. Grey enters on delicate cymbals to create a trio and signals Ballou’s return, this time solo for a focused improvisation that tests his tonal mettle. The concluding “Micro Dosage” is similarly succinct, a playfully incremental, drain-circling piece that stops on a dime.

Liz invited Devin to her 6th birthday party in 1989 in a small coastal village in Maine. Dan was not invited because he was only 3 and lived in Norway. The group formed a trio (electric bass, synth, and drums) in 2014 in Berlin after liking each other very much and finding out they were all musicians from nicenice improvised scenes in New York and Trondheim, connecting in mutually beloved Berlin.

This girlpower trio is propelled by the instant breakfast super-glue kind of immediate musical connection with little draconic Liz as the fulcrum. The two fellows are elastically fastened to her irremovably - Liz is Devin are brothers, Dan and Liz are others. Together rather interestingly they compliment eachother. Combined these 3 surpass a deer but not a moose in size, look as much like champs to ears as sound they to the eyes.

These three musicians, Joel Holmes, Joel Grip, and Devin Gray, met over a dozen years ago, while attending the Peabody music school in Massachusetts.

 Since then, Grip and Gray have played together as the rhythm section in both CORPULENT and JOLLY BOAT PIRATES, as well as doing a million things on their own and with other people in the direction of experimental/avantgarde/improvised jazz; while Joel Holmes had been exploring his own path, more in the spirit of jazz tradition, but also trying to bring together hip-hop, soul, funk and jazz with his most recent projects, The Greenhouse Expansion / The Greenhouse Experiment.

This happened at a random art gallery in Brooklyn on Friday night after the Breiner/Gray/Kosack show at Midwood Music House. A bunch of freaky artists, about 2,000 peanuts strung from the ceiling each with an individual message sharpied onto it, a motorcycle with a bunch of spray paint on it (the owner later came and picked it up, NOT happy), some PBRs, a flying grapefruit, and a pair of very confused and very out of place musicians who happened to wander in. We played a little something for them. Thanks to Devin for the vids.
