wait wtf? I briefly saw on Twitter that Rhys Darby was trending but didn't look into it
yeah, a 15 year old fan jumped in on the current meme of making Spirit Halloween photoshops of our fave “gay loser” costumes.
a full grown woman @’d Rhys’ wife, who is active on twitter and with the fandom.
and this person, seemed to get it was a joke, but his wife took it quite serious. seemingly, not understanding it was photoshopped and took the joke of “gay loser” very negatively.
She then contacted her husband’s team, and says they may contact Spirit Halloween (after being told it was photoshopped) and she called the joke “mean spirited” and has tried to go to this person’s twitter directly and has called so much attention to this person now that they’ve blocked her and she made a pissy post about being blocked by them, as if that was somehow shocking at this point.
A great example of having to be so careful of how you engage in fandom and not getting comfortable at all with the people “Involved” with creation of the entertainment. they are two separate worlds and also the generation gap and also sexuality “gap” becomes very apparent in the joke and misunderstanding of it. a straight white woman not understanding that this might actually be a joke made by gay people for gay people about a gay character.
