I didn’t pick up Douglas Adams’ Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy until I was in 6th grade already, prompted by the film which starred Sam Rockwell and Martin Freeman. Now, we can debate on whether it was a good adaptation or not (the majority would like to think that it wasn’t), but that was my entry point to Adams’ work. At first I was just amused at how silly and tangential all the characters and their plotlines are. I was more interested in the dispirited android, towels, and the number 42. It wasn’t until I got older when I appreciated his books a little better. His witticisms, and how amid the convoluted plot lines, I was eager to follow the characters and got excited for every action they make. I think stories are the kind that brings out new ideas or reflections from you from every re-read. I just wished I re-read them though, I haven’t picked up those books since finishing them when I was younger, primarily because of teenage angst and a whole lot of hormones to deal with.
