The road from Dharamkot to McLeod Ganj ..
After my Vipassana silent meditation retreat, I thought I was done with keeping my trap shut... Ironically though, it looks like I spoke too soon....
Tushita Meditation Centre was founded in the 70s by Lamas Yeshe and Zopa in response to ever increasing western interest in Buddhism. Since then, it has provided 10-day ‘Introduction to Buddhism’ silent retreats, with a focus on meditation.
I’d heard good things about the course and, despite my extensive travel in Asia, I hadn’t really studied Buddhism in any depth.
It was no where near as difficult as my previous retreat; especially as it had several teachings and an hour-long discussion group per day. The meditation was also very different from Vipassana. In addition to single-pointed concentration (‘samatha’), we also practiced analytical meditation, which works on reducing distructive emotions and enhancing more positive states of mind.
It all sounds pretty out there, but, actually, I found a lot of similarities between Buddhist teachings and CBT (cognitive behavioural therapy) - a therapy that helps you manage problems by changing the way you interpret the world. It makes sense now why the Dalai Lama is such a happy fellow despite his 60 year excile from his homeland!
I went to the hills again, very much alone this time. I have yet to write a blog post about it, which I will once I am done being lazy about it.
But I look at these pictures and miss the place a bit too much. My first ever solo trip!
Aaaahhhhhhh<3
P.s. This is Naddi Valley; I sat for almost two hours in somebody’s lawns directly facing this view close-up because it was ethereal!
On my day off I did a trek up one of the mountains in the Dhauladar Range of the Himalayas. Even as one of the smaller peaks, I never thought I would ever get close to the Himalayas, let alone make it to the summit of one of them!
Low season and Dharamkot is a virtual ghost town, perfect for exploring...
