i feel like it’s super common to characterize duck as yelling / angry all the time which is annoying bc i think his best moments r when his voice is just so normal. Like he doesnt actually yell / sound super angry that often. when he says stuff like “attention freaks” or “get away from me duncan” etc etc half the humor is that he’s NOT boisterous & loud & mean & demanding. i think ppl r confusing his words w his delivery in a way that makes it feel flat & boring & ooc

Storytellers and artists, watch this.👇

I know I've been singing "Better Call Saul"'s praises a lot lately, but this video has really good writing advice.👆Whatever genre you're writing, whatever story you want to tell, the stuff that they talk about here is *universal*. It's so useful.

If you're serious about storytelling and you wanna make your own stories someday, give this a watch.

Storytelling is a passion just like any art form, and if you can't feel that hot-blooded passion, you won't be able to bring anything to life.

Side note: There's no such thing as a perfect storyteller. I'm a fan of Vince Gilligan, but even he makes mistakes sometimes, creatively. I watched his new show recently called "Pluribus", and I really wanted to like it. It even had a lesbian as the main character, called Carol. But the high-concept setting isn't really utilized very well here. Actually, it's somewhat similar to TADC in that respect; there's a main human woman, maybe 7(?) other survivors, and one alien hivemind. But Carol remains pretty one-dimensional, and we don't learn much about the other humans, except for 2 male characters (Koumba and Manousos). So yeah, it seems like tiny settings in general must be very challenging for writers (end of the world, a handful of humans). You want to keep the world small and claustrophobic, but you also want to watch interesting characters react to various scenarios. So yeah, not even Vince Gilligan is immune to clunky storytelling. Live and learn, and do your best to write things for yourself.

In terms of stories that successfully write tiny/claustrophobic worlds, the best example I can think of is "Don't Hug Me I'm Scared" (the TV show in particular; the webseries is different. Not bad, but different). "Don't Hug Me I'm Scared" has great character exploration, without compromising the nightmarish setting the characters live in. Their world is still surreal, still uncomfortable, still colourful and childish. But you're never bored. The characters always have something to say, something to do. Their dialogue flows naturally - they don't rattle off character traits because the writer doesn't know how else to convey such information.
