Dhofari traditional dress style, from the southern Dhofar Region of Oman.

This is my daughters' favourite style of Omani dress for comfort.

In the 1960s and 1970s, while Oman was a sultanate in name but de facto under British rule, a fight for the governance of Oman, particularly the province of Dhofar (which was in many ways distinct from Omani culture), waged between the sultan’s forces (backed by the West) and the rebel forces (who underwent a good many tongue-twisting iterations, most of which contained the words “front,” “liberation,” and “popular,” and who were backed by....well, mostly by themselves).  The ensuing civil war lasted until 1976 before the rebels of Dhofar were defeated militarily.  Their cause persists under the banner of the People’s Democratic Front of Oman.
