I'd just like to thank you for your posts about your feelings on "mad" Dany on the books. I've heard so much about how the only problem was the excution on the show not the concept itself, but honestly? I don't care for how expertly GRRM writes that either, I'm just not interested in reading this, especially if it does end on Jon killing her for her own good and the good of the world. It has zero appeal to me. So yeah, thanks for making me feel less alone.

Glad to know you agree. I actually like villain characters and dark characters. They’re usually my favorites. But Dany never felt that way to me in either the book or the show so for her to turn that way toward the end would be upsetting to me regardless :/

poor becky :( that “upgraded to personal maid” thing as a “just” HEA reward for all her loyalty and friendship never sat well with me.

I know -- looking at it as an adult, of course (or, really, even looking at it as an older child when I was reading it), there are MANY!!!!! problematic things in the story, haha. I expect that’s one reason it doesn’t have the universal appeal of The Secret Garden. Even when she’s destitute it’s often portrayed that the worst thing happening to Sara is that her STATUS has been lowered. Becky is always trying to SERVE her because she can’t stand it that such a personage is being treated like a lower-class person. BECKY, the scullery maid. Who has bigger problems. And yeah, then at the end her reward is that she gets to be a slightly less badly treated maid. They always hammer that Sara is kind to people or whatever but the class stuff is hopeless. Even the title, ffs -- the premise being that even when Sara is forced to dress in rags and do errands she’s still innately better than everyone else because of her Birth. 

AND YET, there’s something so sumptuous about the story, and the fairytale aspect of being brought so low and then things slowly and excitingly turning around, that I loved it anyway. What can I say. My fave is problematic.

Serious talk, I feel like there's a massive underestimation of the capital power of female consumers and of the size of the BL niche in general going on? Like. We live in a world where original m/m slavefic erotica is being distributed by Penguin Random House. Sucessfully. What's up with the surprise about fujoshi spending tons of money on shit that caters to them?

idk what this is about/haven't read her comment (is she starting to validate the heretic interpretation of victor being shady in his treatment of plietsky in particular? wow!), but hey! looking good for my predictions of kubo becoming the kanye of fujoshis if given enough time! that should be fun.

In some interview alongside Plisetsky’s voice actor she was asked about that bit where Viktor sent Yuri to the temple to get his back smacked. Kubo laughed about it and called it abuse. This hasn’t gone down well.

She also said that Yuri P also doesn’t have a sad backstory actually(despite what she said earlier about how that made him unsuitable as a protag and actually put in the damn cartoon) and that he apparently has a mother who was supposed to appear, but they cut her involvement in the series for time. 

Basically people are annoyed that she keeps retconning all the characters to have squeaky clean pasts with no drama because she doesn’t like characters being sad or something. 

Tl;dr: bad retcons.

i assume the japanese fans prodding her about it (and i do love that she made sure to point out most of the prodding came from overseas) are doing so because, well, she DID get too close to an Event Horizon there with the baits? "kiss" + "engagement" rings are firmly het romance coded and *much* closer to de facto BL than swimmer/vballer boys telling each other they're each other's everything or w/e.

Yeah she got very close to it there. I think as a cynical business tactics keeping the whole thing ambiguous (even though it isn’t) is a smart move as it’s that uncertainty that ends up keeping people on tenterhooks. In terms of keeping the fandom active? Being vague means people will pay attention to your interviews for longer for more ‘evidence’. It creates tension and leaves the whole thing with no resolution so people will come back for more.

It just doesn’t help that Kubo seems to not know what she’s doing half the time, though. On one hand she tries to keep it vague with platonic sports charms/emphasising the coach and skater dynamic but on the other she spills spaghetti about them being transcendent soulmates.

It’s a mess.

A lot of people are looking towards the series’ director now as The Auteur but I don’t think she’ll say anything. She’s clearly left Kubo in charge of PR, for better or worse.
