So, as with the last two years, I really wanted to make a strip referencing that the earliest version of BETTY BOOP has entered the public domain. No, not to make a crappy slasher flick, but as a bit of fun commentary on the cultural trend to leap on such things. I had NO ideas, and said as much on my Facebook wall. Enter, Eric Costello. The awesome writer of my guest run on DICK TRACY, Eric, mentioned that he had an idea, and I gave him the go-ahead to write it up, and here we are! I think this is only the SECOND time anyone else has written a "Finding Dee" strip that I've drawn, and it was a LOT of fun. I LOVE working with guest writers and guest artists, FYI! (Hint, Hint!)

Both Who Framed Roger Rabbit and Dick Tracy have a lot in common. Aside from the themes of the films, both of them disappeared pretty quickly and both were caught up in troubles which lead to the stop of future projects and merchandise. Both movies are set to a similar film noir theme. DT opens with a cartoonish bunch of gangsters playing cards, and WFRR opens with an actual cartoon. Each of the main cast are very similar, with Jessica and Breathless being very much the same - both are vampy misunderstood femme fatale night club singers who unexpectedly help save the main character at the end. Although Madonna was at the height of her popularity at the time it doesn’t seem that her Breathless Mahoney made as big of an impression as Jessica Rabbit did. Even with my bias of being a Jessica fan, I enjoyed both movies a lot when they were released, yet all these years later, Who Framed Roger Rabbit still holds my attention in a way Dick Tracy does not. Both were merchandised well during release but sadly got tangled in red tape, leading to their disappearance. Jessica fared better with a surge of pins and more released years after.
