Headcanon time!
Trolls’ habitat affects their appearance a lot. Surface trolls (those from Dwoza, Trollmarket and other places close to surface) usually grow moss, mushrooms and flowers on their skin stone. Crystals too, but it’s a much more rare sight, mostly seen on deep cave trolls (such as Kruberas). Trolls from Darklands are not as lucky: their stone is corrupted and visually reminds of human necrosis. Individual patches turn black, green glowing cracks appear. But it’s a much slower process.
Overall, the older the troll (and the longer they live in a certain area), the more features of their habitat they adopt. Some practical examples! While other Kruberas live in deep caves and have crystals all over their body, Arrrgh used to have his stone slightly corrupted as a former gumm-gumm. Once he turned good and started living on the surface, his stone healed and covered with all sorts of plants. Dictatious on the other hand, used to have patches of moss on his stone, but as a Darklands dweller, it’s now gone and replaced with corruption. However, as he now lives with Toby’s grandma, it might revert to its original look.
Changelings and younglings don’t have certain habitat traits. Young trolls are just… well… too young for that and will get them eventually. And changelings are usually more aware of hygiene
