i've thrown together a doc collecting the ways dissociative symptoms have been described in plain terms across some structured interviews (SCID-D and MID) and clinical lit (DSM-5, ICD-11, etc.), to help these concepts be more accessible. see it here and on my site. thanks!

8/1/26 system analysis

a quick rundown of our system as we’ve come to understand it.

• Bex: she/they, nonbinary woman, 23-25. manages the system, daily tasks, and internal maintenance. she is the manifestation of our work in therapy and presents for the most part when we are alone or online. presents in a hyperfeminine way. kind of dipped out for a lot of 2024. Rex, her twin, is not at his best without her. spiritual presentation: Witch.

• Rex: he/him, nonbinary man, 25-30. our newest presentation of the self. he mostly exists in relation to other people, managing our work and relationships in a group setting. he presents in a low-key, neutral-to-masculine way, but also enjoys dressing up and wearing minimal makeup. took over in late May/early April of 2024. he feels like he is missing a lot of the time because we are alone the majority of the time. he acts younger and lacks judgement when Bex is asleep; with her around to anchor him with discernment and realism, he is able to be our best self. this is because, although I describe him as an alter and individual here, he is more of a state of being that comes about when we are working together. because of that, any of us will respond to Rex anytime. spiritual presentation: Angel.

• Rachael: they/them, nonbinary and feminine-presenting, 15-17. they carry our interpersonal and sexual trauma from our teen years and therefore deal with a lot of resentment, rage, and shame. presents in gothic or goth-punk attire with makeup and short natural hair. they front when we are dealing with acute feelings of rejection or betrayal. they know French. spiritual presentation: Jewish.

• Becki: she/her, little girl, 8-10. melodramatic and emotionally reactive. she hid for a long time after we turned 12, but she came back when we started working on Avatar products with Paramount in 2024. she’s the bottom totem of our personality post-split. she cares more about cartoons and manga than real life, and she struggles around people due to her cripplingly low self-esteem. loves Avatar more than anything in the world; it gave her (and thereby the rest of us) a model for human existence and for our personality. on an unconscious level, it also gave us a spiritual model and taught Becki how to save herself by going dormant for many years until it was safe to return. spiritual presentation: Buddhist.

• one non-human alter has identified herself at the age of 7. out of respect for her, I won’t write about her, but she’s carrying memories of incestuous cocsa from our dear older brother, who was born in hell and put on Earth to be scary and evil. she usually holds onto the memories of whatever she learns or talks to us about, which means the “awake” parts of the system can’t access them at will. has a name, but it’s private. spiritual presentation: Animist.

"human in an alterhuman way" is smth i have struggled severely to ever put into words. i am not talking about being fictionkin or an introject. i am talking, in a system that formed with dehumanisation being a huge theme in our life i am the only human in our system. we have no reference point for what it means or even feels like to actually be a human being. i am our mind's best attempt at conjuring what that experience might consist of. an animal's imagination of what a human perspective might be like.

really weird to be able to finally articulate it. human, in an alterhuman way. -🌟

I feel like i’ve woken up from an extreme insanity but since experience has taught me it only hurts in the long run to ignore/reject the alternate timestreams (i.e. i “have” “DID”), it’s a question of: when will i enter the nightmare state again, what will i do about it (him? her?). when i re-become the basher instead of the fag, how will i stay my own hand
