"Today, the fifth of november, I start with my report. I'll write down everything as exactly as possible." These are the famous first words of "The Wall" by Marlen Haushofer. If asked for the ten most important books in their life, many people choose this one. Like me, it's one of my all time favorites. . A woman joins a couple on a trip to their cabin in the mountains. After the first night, the couple went to town and the woman is alone. She tries to follow them and walks down the street where she suddenly hits an invisible wall. There's no way out. That's the start of a life where she is totally on her own. She feels helpless, depressed, has no one to talk, no reasons for this and she tries desperately to hold on some human structures. Hard work is her helper. Bitter. But she feels not young enough for suicide. . That process of falling, realising and carrying on somehow, creating own ways for nutrition, and then finding a way through nature is written so exact and stunningly good. It's a melancholia that lays on everything. But cognition is a result. The wall is desire and horror scenario too. A departure into freedom, independence some say. A deep and fantastic book with maybe the best ending of a book ever.
