Zeke didn’t get to reconcile w his mother in the same way Eren didn’t in the end, and that’s so lost to interpretation. I really wish we knew more about what he and Dina’s relationship was like bc Grisha overshadowed so much of Zeke and Eren’s respective purposes that it like… kind of eclipsed the significance of their mothers to them? :’o

I feel like the way Dina is portrait she was always dependent on Grisha. In every scene she seems so timid and weak always turned towards Grisha or cliging on to him. When they first met he's always yelling about the eldian empire while she's timidly waiting for someoen to ask her something. She is portrayed as relatively weak and seems enchanted by Grishas strong personality and will to fight. It's perfect, she looks up to him and he sees her as a way to reanimate Eldia.

I think there was a very notable power dynamic in their relationship. Dina looks up to him, she saw somewhat of a saviour while Grisha saw an opportunity. Of course they loved eachother, how could Dina not lve him and how could Grisha, who was so convinced of Eldian superiority, not love someone of royal blood who also seemed to actively seek him out.

The relationship was not balanced but it wasn't abusive. The thing that changed everything seems to have been zeke here. At first both of them seem really happy and everything is perfect but as Zeke grows Grisha changes. Dina always seems to be agreeing with Grisha on everything, she encourages Zeke just as much as Grisha but she still seems like more of a bystander. Eventually though she sems to realize how much of a toll everything ahs on Zeke, she actually tries to reason with Grisha but he yells at her just as much as he does at Zeke.

Dina was just as much a tool to Grisha as Zeke. Both of them weren't real people for him but merely ways to get eldia back to it's glory. The moment Dina isn't on the same side as him anymore he snaps and fights her. The way they're drawn also seems very interesting to me. Grisha is drawn with this angry and over the top expression while Dina looks like she's actively begging him.

I don't think their relationship was physically abusive but definitely mentally. Grisha had an iron grip on Dina and he shot down any doubts she had about his treatment of Zeke. I honestly don't know if she actually would share all his opinions or if she just did and said what he expected her to to make him happy.

Dina wasn't a good mother but at least she seemed to have a bit more sympathy for her son than Grisha did. I feel conflicted abou whether to be mad at her for being a bad mother or to feel bad for her for being trapped with Grisha.
