more mariolore nonsense, not real mario
Rewatching the series, I'm struck once again by how mmm devoted? The toads are to their human masters/ employers.
Especially Toadette, especially in the second act before she has more outside relationships/ friends with Mario, Luigi, and Toad... there's something so very desperate and dog-like at times about how she idolizes Peach and vies for her favor, even to her own detriment/ at her own cost.
For example, when she intercedes with Bowser on Peach's behalf after the cheating scandal and risks essentially telling off her superior/ her employer in an effort to make Bowser more sympathetic to Peach/ to reconcile the two.
Or all the times she tries to be Peach's genuine friend and give her advice, even when Peach never reciprocates this friendship and only ever treats her like a servant.
Or even in the third act when Peach kills Boo (and then runs out into the hallway and IMMEDIATELY tells the very first person she sees lmao), Toadette's loyalty is steadily and unerringly to Peach, not to the crown, and not to her own self preservation either.
Like, Toadette is SO aligned with Peach/ is SO loyal, that, even though Boo's murder had nothing to do with her and she could have just turned around and booked it, she instead immediately becomes an accomplice and covers up Peach's actions, seemingly without even thinking about it.
That quiet presupposition of complete and total loyalty in a character is. It just does something to me man, I don't know.
But although this is a type of love, it's also a complete blindness-- when Daisy criticizes Peach, for example, Toadette has this outburst about how "you're supposed to be her friend!" which I think is a great bit of writing on dinobunny's part.
It shows quite clearly how Toadette is SO consumed by this worship of Peach that she a) can't stand any criticism of her at all, even when Peach might genuinely deserve it and b) she doesn't understand how in a real friendship between equals, part of the deal is calling your friend out on their bs and being honest when there's something they need to change.
Anyways, TLDR Toadette the kinda girl to sit at Peach's feet on the floor just in the hopes Peach will put a hand on her head, woof woof Peach come get ur bitch before she tells Mario and luigi more state secrets
Oh and as for Toadsworth... hooo boy don't get me started. I've made a couple other posts about Toadsworth's Boo-shaped blindspot (and also written about 5k words on ao3, here is a shameless self promo) but Toadsworth's total support of Boo, even as he does some pretty monstrous shit (e.g. murder, general tyranny and poor leadership of the country, running himself into the ground, destroying his brother's marriage, etc etc the list goes on) is a relationship of devotion in the same vein as Toadette's.
Although I think for Toadsworth it comes more from having known Boo since he was a child, rather than the mutated crush Toadette seems to be suffering from...
You wonder the kind of stuff you have to go through with someone to erase all their faults from your eyes, to see them nearly permanently not for how they are but for how they used to be.
I wonder if all close servile relationships bxt characters eventually become like this, where they start caring more about the other person than themself, or if this is just a motif in the mariolore universe that dinobunny are playing with shrug emoji
