As I said I’m no paleoartist, but here’s some sketches from my little domesticated dinosaurs world.
I’m still learning but I’m not really in the mood for reviving constructive criticism rn. These are just sketches after all, I’m not doing a full study on em.
Learn more about it here. https://lilyminer.tumblr.com/post/628631971482992642/alright-here-we-go-with-the-whole-domesticated
So as much thought as I’ve put into this idea I’m not really sure the basic backstory of the situation. I’ve played around with a time-trave
Alright here we go with the whole domesticated dinosaurs thing, I’m just getting my thoughts out so if I decide to draw out some of this I’ll post it later.
So as much thought as I’ve put into this idea I’m not really sure the basic backstory of the situation. I’ve played around with a time-travel scenario, or a jurassic park type thing. But I’ve not really nailed that down yet, basically there’s a smaller and less advanced population of humans who live alongside all types of dinosaurs (from all different eras because it’s more fun this way).
I’m terribly sorry but I’m not a palaeontologist so I may not get the strength of certain dino’s or their ability to balance in certain circumstances correct. I just want dinos with saddles ok. Also I make a lot of assumptions about dino behaviour but like, can you tell me I’m wrong? Technically no.
Ok so here’s the basic ideas of the society. Large herbivorous dinosaurs, stuff like triceratops and stegosaurus are a lot like working horses. They plough fields, pull carts, carry heavy loads of material, and are its best for each family to have one for basic transportation. Hadrosaurs of all kinds are usually used for more docile mounts, they're easy to sell to average citizens so farmers usually take care of large herds and sell them whenever they can. Smaller or young herbivores can be used to carry your things from place to place, this is very general so some aren’t very good for riding. Pachycephalosaurus are a bit of an oddball obviously, I’m compelled to think there’s a scattering of organized pachy fighting rings. I mean it wouldn’t be tremendously damaging to the animal so it might even be legal?!
So carnivore wise here’s the deal, I can’t imagine teaching one of these animals to respect or listen to you is too easy. Even a human raised T-Rex could still easily kill you, I guess a horse could do that too but ummmm. Anyways if you have a large sized carnivorous mount you often get the respect of the people who see you almost immediately. Your average traveller has a dilophosaurus, a utah raptor, or sometimes a baryonyx as a mount. It is difficult to catch or domesticate a spinosaurus but those who do usually use them to carry cargo through wetlands or places with lots of rivers. Those who are willing to put in the time and risk their lives find themselves with carnotaurus, gigasaurs, or t-rex mounts. People who maintain a dangerous trading route often get themselves a tightly nit pack of medium carnivores to protect both their cargo and the expensive dinos that carry it. Smaller carnivores (raptors and pterosaurs) often work as smaller companions, they do jobs that cats and dogs do for us! Hunt rats, herd livestock, keep an eye out, do (insert whatever people do with falcons).
So that’s pretty much all I got for now, suggestions are cool if y’all have another idea. I have some more stuff I wanna talk about with saddles, harnesses, basic society stuff, breeders, caring for your dino, and some possible “team dynamics”. But this is already a lot so I guess I’ll do a part 2 later.
You know if humans and dinosaurs were alive at the same time we would totally have found a way to ride them.
