(So you can see exactly how this game is played) Governments and advertisers play a huge role in creating propaganda – because they want to do the thinking for you! Edward L. Bernays, is thought of as the founder of modern propaganda – And no wonder… He was Sigmund Freud’s disciple and nephew. In his 1928 book, 𝗣𝗿𝗼𝗽𝗮𝗴𝗮𝗻𝗱𝗮, Bernays says, “We are governed, our minds are molded, our tastes formed, our ideas suggested, largely from men we have never heard of.” Here’s 3 tools propagandists use to – get you to do what they want: 1. 𝗧𝗿𝗶𝗯𝗮𝗹𝗶𝘀𝗺, 𝗘𝗺𝗼𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝗮𝗹𝗶𝘀𝗺 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗡𝗮𝗿𝗰𝗶𝘀𝘀𝗶𝘀𝗺. Because humans are group animals, we have the instinct to 𝗳𝗼𝗿𝗺 𝘁𝗿𝗶𝗯𝗲𝘀 with a hierarchy and leader. So, first the propagandist must appeal to our tribalism: Edward feels, “Physical loneliness is a real terror” and because we are afraid of being alone, we have the strong desire to identify with a group… And being part of the herd gives us a sense of security. 𝗧𝗵𝗶𝘀 𝗶𝘀 𝘁𝗿𝗶𝗯𝗮𝗹𝗶𝘀𝗺. 2. Our perceptions travel to our 𝗲𝗺𝗼𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝗮𝗹 𝗯𝗿𝗮𝗶𝗻 first before they get to our rational brain. Bernays claims, “The group mind does not think… In making up its mind, its first impulse is usually to follow the example of a trusted leader.” 𝗧𝗵𝗶𝘀 𝗶𝘀 𝗲𝗺𝗼𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝗮𝗹𝗶𝘀𝗺. Our mind has a 𝗻𝗮𝗿𝗰𝗶𝘀𝘀𝗶𝘀𝘁𝗶𝗰 𝘁𝗲𝗻𝗱𝗲𝗻𝗰𝘆 to see things as good or bad, with little in-between. Edwards says, “People have to take sides.” They want to belong to something larger than themselves.
