You know since you reblogged the ask meme for Ebon, I've actually been curious, how have you guys handled the drow eyesight thing? Aren't they basically blind in sunlight or have you ignored that rule?
Oh, good question! And this one actually has a few answers.
The problem is that the mechanics in the handbook assume you’re playing a drow that’s straight out of the Underdark – either a villain drow, or one that’s just come to the surface, etc. In that case, yes, you’re absolutely right. They aren’t blind in sunlight, but they’re extremely sensitive to it.
Mechanically, the handbook has drow roll disadvantage on sight-based rolls if they’re in direct sunlight because their eyes are so sensitive to the sun. Lore-wise, when drow first come to the surface, the sun straight up burns them. It’s not as bad as a vampire, but it hurts their skin and burns their eyes if they’re in it for too long, their drow magic starts failing, and it’ll even disintegrate their magic items.
That said, over a lengthy period of time, they do get used to it and it doesn’t bother them anymore. Since Ebon is a drow who’s been on the surface for several decades, we basically decided to ignore the sunlight sensitivity rule because it didn’t really make sense narratively. (Although he did cringe a lot, being in a party with a sun cleric casting radiant spells, and a guy with a sun sword.)
AND recently that’s become even less of an issue because he made a pact with some Bad Juju and lost his eyes, LOL. He can still see, but his physical eyes are blind – think Daredevil, Demon Hunters in WoW, Miraluka in Star Wars, etc. So now he IS blind, but the sunlight won’t ever be an issue again, hahaha.
