Book mail arrived today! This is actually my first owned copy of a book on disability studies, and it's about time. Disfigured: On Fairy Tales, Disability, and Making Space by Amanda Leduc is one I've been eager to read for months, and I am so excited to have my copy so I can finally read it. Feel down today... I've been trying to find my way towards writing about ancient cryp theory for approximately a year now and I feel like my second attempt is just another fail. It's so important to me and I just feel like it's not something my profs want me to write or want to read. Even when I secure permission to do it, I feel like they try to urge me in other directions. I'm just completely discouraged rn.. And I hate that. I've read enough Thobani and Ahmed to know that the discouragement I feel is a result of dominant power dynamics which establish and undergird narratives of the nation state but I just feel like no matter how much I research, I don't get anywhere. Why is no one willing to openly talk about able bodiedness as a cultural construct? Why is no one willing to consider a pejorative view; that this construct is an exclusionary mechanism which effected ideas of identity and belonging in antiquity and continues to do so today. I'm research sad.

I’m not sure what to think of this. But, we often don’t think of disability as a “performative identity” as we would gender. Similarly, we don’t typically discuss forms of self-expression in the disability community as we would in queer theory (ie: femme, hard femme, masculine of center etc). Lots of the arguments in the comment section rest on the fact that disability culture, community, identity and experience should not be something one would want to enter into (though I will say I am really uncomfortable with how she describes her experience as a wheelchair user). The backlash with her BIID identity is similar to backlash transwoman experience. In that, she is transitioning to a community that lacks institutional power and receives immense discrimination. Does this take away from the legitimacy of her identity? Are there not cultural and legitimate ways to understand and experience the body as a spectrum of ability and thus identity? Especially considering disability IS a subjective experience based upon one's environment in many situations.  Just some thoughts, I’ve been trying to understand and conceptualize BIID for a while now..not to sure what I think.
