Disabled Swiftie Night!!!
Hi! My names Laura I’m 25 and I’m from the UK. This is my first time posting for disabled swiftie night.
I was diagnosed profoundly deaf when I was 7 years old. I have basically no hearing AT ALL in my left ear. Doctors have no idea what caused the hearing loss, I was at school and suddenly had a high pitched ringing noise in my left ear and then the sound just vanished. I was TERRIFIED.
We were referred to the hospital and the specialist basically said the hearing loss could have been caused by one of three things: an ear infection, a bang to the head, or a brain tumour! I remember wondering what a brain tumour was and asking my mum what that meant, but she said I was too young to understand. I had brain scans and tests and the doctors couldn’t figure out what was wrong with me.
The sudden loss in hearing also caused the balance in my brain to go off kilter, meaning I am permanently dizzy and nauseous. When I was younger a simple tap to the head would cause me to vomit and be unable to stand up for 3 days. Luckily that’s stopped now and I’m just slightly dizzy all the time - kind of feels like being drunk!
I wear a hearing aid in my left ear and can lip read, I wasn’t taught sign language as I can still hear most things with my right ear and my speech is unaffected because I had already learnt to talk. However, because they don’t know what’s caused the hearing loss there is no guarantee that I won’t also lose the hearing in my right ear so I want to learn sign language ASAP just in case.
I’d like to be my old self again but I’m still trying to find it
I totally missed disabled selfie night, but I just wanted to encourage everyone to stay strong and keep moving forward during this difficult time. I’m here for all of you and you can always reach out and talk to me, I need more friends (especially since I can’t see anyone in person). Sending everyone love and support.
thinking about “I'm a woman, I'm not a coat hanger. I need to feel healthy in my life and I need to take pleasure in food and I need to not use my body as an exercise of control when I feel out of control in my life” on this fine disabled swifties night (peep the gigantic christmas tree in berlin behind me 🎄🌲🎄🌲)
Happy disabled swiftie night! Even though I have MS, I’m not letting it get me down. I’ve been working out daily and feeling stronger! I hope you’re all hanging in there and thriving. 😘
“i wanna be defined by the things that i love, not the things i hate, not the things i’m afraid of, the things that haunt me in the middle of the night, i... i just think you are what you love.”
this quote means so much to me, despite things that have gotten in my way in life like anxiety and adhd, they do not define me💘@swiftiesofcolor
