Chrysalis Exhibition
Our group exhibition at the James Barry in M.T.U was the first proper exhibtion I've been a part of. Instantly the biggest difference when we actually got to the exhibition was having to work with a curator. Having someone else choose what work i was going to display, was a bit nerve racking. Also due to not overcrowding the walls I could only display one piece so it was particularly hard not having control of what would be displayed.
In the end one of the two drawings i brought Yggdrasil Overgrown was chose. I asked to be opposite the window because the gold on the drawing is reflective and the gold shows a lot more detail when there is stronger light on it. This worked out even better than i expected as the wall opposite the window had been painted blue for our show and the colour made the gold in the drawing stand out even more.
Hanging my work: It was important to make sure it was consistent with the other works on the same wall. This normally means hanging the works with their centers the same distance of the wall and thats what we decided to go for.
It's also important to hang the pieces the same distance from each other and to hang the outer pieces the same distance from the edge of the wall. In most cases you should try to hang your work with the center at eye level, obviously there is no uniform eye level but a good standard is 150cm off the floor. I ended up hanging mine a little lower as it felt a bit high when we tested it, i ended up hanging it with the center about 135cm of the floor. Then the other people on the wall used my work as a reference for their pieces.
The curator Eamonn Maxwell ended up putting two other pieces with gold or deep yellow colours on the wall so that the whole wall had a consistent colours. The other two pieces also had some visual similarities.
Overall i think my work looked very good where it was displayed and it was great to have the natural daylight on it. It was a really great experience to be a part of the group show and i look forward to doing another again soon.
