What do you think Evelyn and Tobias’s relationship was like after allegiant?
Four - Tobias now - drives Evelyn to the Bureau and walks her to her gate. The terms were clear, anyone who wanted out flew free. They didn’t say much on the way there, they weren’t people much for talking. Not much for long, teary goodbyes either. Everything they had to say to each other had basically already been said.
But he writes to her and she writes him back. She tells him about the little apartment she’s renting, about the weather down south, about the huge dog she gets that reminds her of him. She likes the south, she thrives there. He tells her about his job under Johanna, and about board game night with Zeke and Shauna, and keeps recommending her nature documentaries. They talk about normal people stuff; not the war, or Marcus, or their time as allies and then opponents. They’ve wasted too much time on that already. They work their way up to phone calls by degrees, and when he changes her name in his phone from ‘Evelyn’ to ‘Mom’ it feels like they’ve hit a significant milestone.
He goes to visit her first, takes a cheap room in a motel rather than staying with her out of caution. It was like dipping his toe in the water. It had been more than a year since the last time they’d been face to face. But she takes him to the local zoo and they go out to brunch on lazy Sunday mornings. Her friends are thrilled to meet the son they’ve heard so much about, but her dog is by far his favorite part of the trip. He has such a good time that they end up making Hanukkah plans.
Past the two year mark Evelyn moves back to Chicago. They live together for a little while but it’s not like visiting. A lot of words are spilled to his therapist about having another person live in his house. With her return their relationship began to sour again. When she was miles away she was easy to miss in a way, their time face to face was more valuable.
He still meets her twice a month to have brunch.
Which divergent characters would’ve made the best parents if they’d had kids? (I love your blog btw!)
Aww! Thank you so much! I love your blog too!
If they got to live think Marlene and Uriah would be really fun parents. They would have family game night and movie nights. They’re all going to camp out in the living room. When they get to be old enough Uriah will take them zip lining double, triple, quadruple checking the straps to make sure they’re fastened first. Marlene is going to waiting anxiously at the bottom with Uncle Zeke and Aunt Shauna, but she smiles when they can’t stop talking about how cool it was and when can i go again?
Will and Christina as well. Maybe I’m biased cuz I love them but they would be those parents that are friends with their kids too. They’re going to be the mix of fun and responsible, not that Marlene and Uriah aren’t responsible. Will is going to start teaching them things at a young age because he knows children retain information better when they’re younger and Christina is going to roll her eyes playfully at first but then when she sees they aced their first spelling test she’s like ok.
I would be interested to see Tobias as a parent. He makes a conscious effort to not be like Marcus and not make the same mistakes as Evelyn. He would spend a lot of time with his kiddos and loves playing imaginary games with them, whatever they make up. He’s very protective, almost overly so, and his daughter is just like step off dad but he still has trouble since the war of letting the ones he loves stray too far. He’s also the parent that all his kids’ friends finds hot and/or intimidating but he only comes across intimidating when his kids bring home someone he doesn’t like.
Thanks for the ask! Great question
Tobias: *wiping away a tear* At least Tris died doing what she loved.
Christina: What's that?
Tobias: Dying.
Rare moment of Insurgent appreciation for Tobias making all his friends scrambled eggs on the morning they spent in Abnegation. He’d just been tortured in Erudite for days on end, escaped with Tris who he thought had been executed, ended up at his horrible childhood home and still woke up the next morning thinking, Fuck it, I’ll make everyone breakfast.
He’s made out to be this invincible stoic fighter but lets be real him handing out plates and making sure everyone got enough to eat is who he was meant to be
