Quakers believe all people can have a relationship with God, that the Spirit, or voice of God, may be accessed from within. That voice informs the individual about how to live one’s life in unity with the Spirit. When we are centered in our faith, when we are walking in the Light of God, our actions will be directed less by our egos and more by our experience of the nature of God. We attempt to live God’s will. Quakers do that by listening for the still small voice within, the Inner Light as it is called, to guide our daily comings and goings. It is a gentle listening for something far larger than the individual, something beyond, yet found within the heart and mind. Quakerism is an experiential faith.

Transmutation and the Lot of Spirit

The Lot of Spirit is seen as a place of fire, a secret measure traced between Sun and Moon, where the intelligence of light crosses into the vessel of the soul. It is not the same as the Lot of Fortune, one that speaks of chance, body, and survival. Spirit points toward intent, command, and the act of aligning oneself with the Divine purpose – the Hermetic correspondence per se. When the ancients spoke of action in accord with the stars, they meant that the Spirit had been acknowledged and allowed to speak through the human form. It shows the place where Divine harmony demands action through conscious will. Spirit is the locus of telos, where the individual is called to rise beyond the necessities of the flesh and answer to vocation.

Spirit was never given without resistance. Planets that rule it, planets that aspect it, and the houses it touches, they all become points that require labour. The fire of the alchemist is the metaphor of this same process. Only through the burning of imperfections does the hidden gold shine forth. One can live passively within Fortune, carried by events and compelled by circumstance. But Spirit calls for transmutation. Without that, the daimon remains silent, and the human becomes only a body carried along by the river of fate.

I'm a fragment of light

Lickering in a vast darkness,

Finding a cross on my path

Where I have realised

The possibility of choice.

Which choice may is the best

I'm grounding the options.

Either way I choose,

A change is still walked through.

I may not know which one is best

Yet, if I stay in the same place

That is still a choice I make.

I may choose the wong path,

I may encounter a few fireflies,

Spiders, worms and butterflies,

On my way to source of light.

I may get stuck in mud,

Getting darker, havier to walk,

Until I will remind myself

The choice of turning back to starting point,

Where I can choose the other way

On the journey of finding myself.

Don't underestimate the power of choice we have at each moment of our life.
