Wh… what do you mean, serial killer Gale au? 👀‼️‼️‼️ (I am highly inchreeged)

There's nothing concrete written for it yet, mostly vibes I rotate in my brain every once in a while, but there's something about the concept of a sweet gentleman scholar with a dark secret that is very compelling to me. What if the thing that feeds the orb's hunger is life itself? What if he discovers it on accident one day defending himself from someone who tried to break into his tower? So he starts out justifying doing it again by saying he's going to target rapists, and murderers (haha the irony, Gale!!) and the rest of the worst of society. It stabilizes the orb enough that he finally re-enters his old life and starts teaching again, explaining his absence as some chronic illness that's finally abated. At some point he has to come to terms with the fact that he likes killing a little too much, and he's in way too deep now to quit anyway, and besides, if he doesn't keep killing the people who deserve it, he's going to detonate and a lot of people who dont deserve it might die and isnt that *worse*???? He says this to himself in the mirror to help himself sleep at night of course.

And it certainly doesn't help when he catches the eye of one of his students, a gorgeous young academic who is captivated by his wit and intellect and makes him feel alive again. And he shouldn't fall in love, not when he has this horrible secret that could spell his own ruin, but he just can't help himself.

Oops, they found out. Now he has to kill them too. Unless...

What if they're batshit crazy (affectionate) enough to be like "oh that's neat can I help? Maybe observe and take notes?" and hmmm this person knows a little too much about how to lure people away from a crowd, and you know, isn't it strange how they know exactly the right quantity and combination of chemicals to dissolve a body without a trace so quickly?

There's certainly no way this could get very messy for the both of them :V :V :V

Anyway sometimes that concept keeps me awake at night. 😁

The altar is a cold, unforgiving thing of solid stone. The air around him reeks of blood and death, the tang of iron, the cloy of decay.

“Oh, sweetling,” croons a melodic voice with a manic cackle. “It wakes from its dream all alone with no one to pet its pretty little head.”

Gale yanks at his bonds, but several lengths of rope bite into his skin and have him secured tightly to the stone. “Orin,” he realizes aloud. “So this must be the infamous Temple of Bhaal.”

“Does it hurt?” Orin coos. She circles him in an unsettling rhythm, dagger balanced by the point against an unsettlingly steady hand. “Does it worry, does it cry, does it fear?” She leans in close, her lips tickling his ear. Her breath smells of orchids and decay. “She will come for you, oh yes,” she whispers. “She will come and then she will join Father's blood-feast like a lamb to the sweetest slaughter.” Orin drags the knife along his cheek, and he shudders as he feels it scratch a thin line into his skin. “And then it goes drip, drip, drip on the altar where it belongs.”

By the time Gale realizes his mistake, it's far too late to turn back. The magic bites into his skin like knives wiggling their way through his veins. He thinks he's gone blind, the way his left eye seizes up and goes dark with an ache beyond anything he's ever experienced. The book in his hands falls to the floor with a muffled clatter, slamming shut on its own, but the gnawing black hunger between its pages is already devouring a part of him he understands implicitly he will never get back.

He wonders for a moment if his pride will even allow him to ask for help, but there is something about the agony bringing him to his knees that pries words from his soul he knows he has no right to anyway.

I didn't mean for this to happen.

Please, Mystra, help me.

I'm sorry.

Oh, he is a fool. And some part of him knows better than to expect a response, but the silence that meets him is magnified a thousandfold by the piercing hole in his chest that only seems to grow wider by the minute. It's an emptiness beyond compare. It is the stifling darkness of a moonless night, a gnawing absence that threatens to collapse his very bones with the way it consumes. His fist pounds on the floor as another wave shudders through him. He wonders who he hears screaming in the distance, then realizes dimly just how little he recognizes his own voice when he's brought so low.

It is an empty realization by the time the worst of the sickness passes. He slumps against the floor, cheek to cold, polished oak, as a weariness he hasn't felt in years drapes over him like a funeral shroud.

"Please," he croaks, a shuddering whisper swallowed up by the heavy silence that blankets the room. He doesn't know what he's begging for, only that he would do anything to quell whatever it is growing sickening barbs in his chest. He remembers how it felt the way the Weave cloaked him in sweet, honeyed rhapsody. He allows himself a sliver of hope that even in his greatest blunder he might deserve the smallest of mercies.

It doesn't come.
