The 26th name mentioned in Daft Punk’s “Teachers” was DJ ESP, a techno DJ from Minneapolis, Minnesota.
DJ ESP, born Woody McBride in Bismarck, North Dakota in 1967, grew up in Minneapolis and emerged from the Midwest rave scene of the early '90s, a great place to be for underground electronic experimentation. Drawing on punk, industrial, and acid house influences, he became known for his explosive live performances and stripped-down, analog-driven sets.
McBride’s style is defined by relentless 303 basslines, distorted percussion, and hypnotic repetition, i.e. the essence of acid techno. His tracks captured the raw, psychedelic energy of warehouse raves and helped solidify the Midwest as a serious force in global techno culture. Known for his DIY ethos and community focus, he bridged the gap between producer, promoter, and evangelist for electronic music’s underground.
Today, Woody McBride continues to perform, produce, and mentor new artists, embodying the unfiltered spirit of rave culture. His decades-long dedication to live analog performance and sonic experimentation has made him a revered figure in techno history. For many, DJ ESP represents not just a sound, but a movement: acid as philosophy, not just genre.
