You know, it's kind of funny that Terrence Silver of all people would think that Daniel is arrogant or stuck up. It matches with Johnny's insecurity issues when he squares himself up against Daniel. Johnny's main problem was always that he didn't feel good enough around/for Daniel. Kind of thinking that Chozen had that issue as well; up against Daniel he felt unworthy, but very grateful for his forgiveness.
Just interesting that Daniel's rivals view him as above them somehow. Or acting above them. Especially for rich boys who were used to people groveling around them. Except for Mike, maybe? He seems humble around Daniel now, though. Very inch resting.
I've made comparisons to Daniel being a saint or a martyr in fic before, but truly, how does he do it?
He really is female coded because every man he interacts with is putting their own internalized problems onto him. They see something about themselves they don't like in him. They see how he is "doing it wrong" and yet still winning the game.
(being poor, skinny, etc )
He performs masculinity in a way that pisses other men off. While also showing them an alluring image of this non toxic beautifully androgynous and self confident man who gets all the ladies.
Self conscious! Horny! Mad!
Terry feels insecure about his hollow home life, his lack of friends, his reliance on image?
Wow. Daniel sure can be full of himself. High and mighty. Like he's better than other people, like his things make him less lonely than he is. Oops.
Johnny is insecure about his masculinity of course, but as you pointed out I feel like he's one of those people who struggles so much with a sense of self worth that he views other's successes as personal attacks.
He probably doesn't realize it, but when he sees Daniel being the carefree teen he was, the good dad and husband, the self confident karate practitioner, the emotional and softness... It stings because he isn't/never got to be those things. Oops.
I do have this headcanon that a lot of Chozen's dislike of Daniel was secretly rooted in himself. And that he saw Daniel being open and unafraid in his own masculinity (and queerness. Bicon. ) And felt resentful that he felt he wasn't allowed that same softness, or truth. So much of his character comes down to what he believes is honorable vs the performance of power and masculinity I feel.
He was living as a character of a strong, agro, straight guy when he met Daniel, and Daniel then embarrassed him. Embarrassed him by saving that girl, beating him, and THEN sparing him.
I think that was a level of self hatred that took years to figure out, along with Sato, Yukie, and Kumiko's help. And that after all those years of progress his true strength is in his ability to forgive himself for his past actions and the courage to live with them.
Idk. It's been a while since I've seen the movie and been in his head space but I just have a lot of feels about angry baby queer Chozen struggling with his identity.
Mike we know by far the least about, other than he was angry and driven by success. He seemed to only have karate. And what was Daniel doing in the third movie? Making friends for the first time and exploring a business idea he genuinely cared about. There was an honest love put into Little Trees.
He's also cute and they want to get their hands on him.
I also will go on record and say a lot of Daniel's writing, like other male characters thinking he's stuck up or holier than though, is probably the writer's thinly veiled insecurities about themselves considering they identified so hard with wanting to kick his ass for totally heterosexual reasons.
Daniel LaRusso Derangement Syndrome and the Straight Man's Response to Ralph Macchio are two sides of the same coin.
