It’s been a year since Daniel’s divorce.
A whole year of Johnny spending damn near every waking moment with him, determined to keep Daniel from shattering completely into a million glittering pieces.
Johnny can just picture it– the jagged shards of Daniel’s heart laid out and stepped over. But Johnny would spend the rest of his life picking up those pieces, cutting his hands bloody, if it meant putting Daniel back together.
They’ve just come back from dinner, Johnny dropping Daniel off at Miyagi-Do, something they do almost every night now, but Johnny doesn’t stay in his car this time to make sure Daniel gets inside safely. Tonight, Johnny gets out and calls out for him to wait.
Daniel turns around, still illuminated even against the night sky.
“I can’t do this anymore,” Johnny says.
Daniel blinks, confused. “What?”
Johnny hesitates, never good with words. “I mean– you have to know. You have to know by now.”
“Johnny, I don’t know what you’re talking about–”
Daniel sucks in a breath and Johnny hurries to explain, because it’s important Daniel understands.
“I know I’m not… I’m not what you deserve. What you wanted. But I love you, so much, and I can’t spend another night away from you. It hurts too much.” Johnny takes a few cautious steps closer. “We have fun together, don’t we? I know– I know I can make you happy. Just give me a chance. All I’m asking for is one chance. Let me take care of you, like you took care of me. And if I just fucked things up between us, then it’s okay, because at least you know. It was worth it to me.”
Daniel seems stunned into silence, but Johnny finds the strength to power through.
“It’s worth it,” Johnny says. “Because I’d rather have one day loving you than spend the rest of my life pretending I don’t.”
Johnny lets out a deep breath and nods. There. He meets Daniel’s eyes with his heart thundering in his chest.
