i thought this chatter i was seeing about the NVIDIA DLSS 5 drop was nothing but having looked into it finally it does appear to be somewhat of a deal, maybe not a big one but a deal nontheless. the CEO did this big press conference where he claimed this new AI game rendering tool they are hyping up works at the geometry level of the game engine to work, and isn't just a yassification filter, despite making all the games they used to showcase it look identical to if you ran them through a yassification filter. think waxy, overcontrasted, oversaturated, rimlit and completely homogeneous Midjourney slop.

well, someone actually did what im always telling people to do, and Emailed Someone Who Knows, in this case an NVIDIA engineer, who confirmed--albeit with the maximum amount of hemming and hawing-that DLSS 5 isnt touching the game engine or geometry, it is in fact just reading 2d frames that have already been rendered and then doing what yassification filters always do: make a bunch of autocorrect-style decisions about what the scene 'should' look like

it also appears to be slapping a second rendering pipeline on top of the existing game, which sounds like a nightmare for performance on home computers anyway.

so who is this for? what is it for? is this a panic-PR move to avoid shareholder dropout? the crypto market did something weird at exactly 5pm today (yesterday, PST, bitcoin is under 69k again, actually under 68k i just checked, #waow #woah), a little mini-crash, and a bunch of other money stuff happened this week that i wont bore you with, but i could definitely see Jensen Huang (amazing name btw, incredibly cyberpunk, nominative determinism is real) shitting himself because of market/crypto/trading FUD this week and just making a bad decision to push this weird garbage prototype
