NVIDIA REVEALED DLSS5 AND Y'ALL AREN'T ANGRY ENOUGH
Nvidia just revealed their next generation DLSS 5 and it is legitimately the worst thing to ever touch video games. Now, ontop of the video upscaling and frame generation, Nvidia is adding environmental and facial post processing and the results are fucking horrendous.
Grace DOES NOT LOOK LIKE GRACE she looks like every AIGenerated woman that is used to sell porn scams or what people 4Chan call the "ideal woman" - the ideal woman of them of course is a jaw lined, lip-filled and glossy, clean blonde woman with perfect white complexion. Because oligarchs (and those that blindly follow them) are built on white nationalism. This is their ideology, this is what the perfect woman looks like to them and what every woman should look like and they will stop at nothing to make it true...
Beyond this the end results are just straight up awful. Lighting is completely wrong, making environments unnecessarily bright and just removing shadows all together...
The use of the Oblivion remaster and Assassin's Creed Shadows are by far the worst offenders, every single usage of DLSS5 looks like they were taken from a Polaroid with too much exposure...
Above: Assassin's Creed Shadows
Above and Below: Elder Scrolls IV Remaster
Now you might be thinking "It's DLSS, it is an optional feature we can turn it off" and this is where I am going to have to put my tinfoil hat on for a bit and make a little theory:
Jensen has A LOT of money riding on AI being the future and on top of all the LLMs, consumer AI usage is also part of it, which includes GenAI photo editing - features that Samsung, Google, Apple and Meta all are trying to cram down your throats into thinking that it is normal to completely fake your life. This is just another method to that conditioning. Grace with DLSS5 is just another example of that slop and slapping it within a feature that in modern PC gaming has basically become a necessity, means that we will all be exposed to it - directly or through livestreams and let's plays. Nvidia has now introduced a scenario whether you either spend £5,000 to get what the actual game looks like, or be fed AI slop just to get your game to run.
In short, this shit is horrendous and is just a really shitty reshader with a 4chan woman filter built in. I just want an upscaler, that's all I wanted. Stop changing my game from the source material and actively making it worse.
It's an insult to my eyes, my monitor and the art team of the game I'm playing. Fuck you Nvidia. Fuck you Jensen.
And also absolutely fuck you to Digital Foundry to try and sell this as some innovative next step in gaming. I have lost all trust with that company.
So Nvidea looked at the current gaming industry, where indies with a real identity and strong art direction are making waves, and high budget generic looks are flopping...
... and thought they should throw everything behind the flops and turning the indies into them.
Playing Kirby with my new DLSS on!
idk about these new graphics cards
Is anyone talking about how DLSS5 is giving all of its characters makeup?
Not just the femm characters either, although it's most egregious on them - foundation, blush, lippie, eye liner, the whole 9 yards. But on mascs too; they get all oily skinned and pink-lipped. It's fucking ridiculous. They trained this model on absolute garbage.
There's also a greater functional problem too, and I'd imagine it's why they're not showing the tech in heavy motion right now either:
The 'relighting' done for each character does not move with respect to real light source placement at all.
The best example is Leon's Hair Puff here as he moves.
Watch the quaff of hair as it moves.
If the key light that were off-screen to the left were ACTUALLY there, the shadows INSIDE his quaff of hair would move! The shadows on his face would move!
BUT THEY DON'T!
It's like the hair itself is glowing!
This tech is going to look like DOGSHIT in motion, and NOT solely because of the AI filter look. It's gonna look unrealistic as fuck, and I don't think there's anything they can do about it, because it seems to be trained to recreate still or low-motion imagery.
Can't WAIT for this to bomb out and stall the progress of DLSS!
On a completly unrelated note, there is something about the current DLSS thing (Nvidia's most recent PR-disaster) that I see barely mentioned at all. This might not be about gaming at all.
This is content-changing capabilities within the machine after set parameters. The question right now might sound a bit retro, and perhaps I am apporaching this from a weird angle due to my Media Studies thing, but... doesn't this sound like a few steps away from some dystopian sci-fi "The Television that censors itself" sort of deal?
Generally media censorship has two avenues: manipulate the content before distribution (black bars, cut scenes, etc.) or criminalize the distribution (and also possibly the posession) itself. But all that takes tremendous effort in relation to litte success in actually stopping the media content. Sure, it will take more effort to access, and said access might be risky, but compared to the resources put into holding up the censorship the results are lacking from the censor's perspective.
When image generation is not about "make some in-betweens to make the video go smoother" anymore but instead actual changes to what is shown, then you have to ask yourself what the limit will be with some future development. Suddenly it will not matter if somewhere on the net you found an uncensored version of whatever media you were looking for - your device will recognize it and do the censorship locally in real-time before the image even gets rendered on your screen.
Now I am far from assuming this is what Nvidia has had in mind here first and foremost - it is after all a theory that goes way into tinfoil-hat territory. But they are a company that does not live of sales to regular people. No regular person needs or has ever needed a 5.000€+ GPU. They are selling to companies, and they need investors after having gone in hard into a thing that with every passing day looks more like a bubble ready to pop.
Regular people might find this thought of such censorship and manipulation appalling. The "Tech-Bro" oligarch caste with the deep pockets... not so much.
The DLSS video’s comment section is all people saying “that’s not what Grace Ashcroft looks like, what are you doing?”
Do you know how badly you need to fuck up for a YouTube gamers to be mad that you’re disrespecting women?
