DmC Devil May Cry alternate costumes: Son of Sparda- Neo- Dark- Standard (newgame+)- DMC1- Classic
I’m always thinking about how people react to a sequel character that ‘undermines’ a known franchise favourite, vs a rival character that tries to be ‘better’.
TL:DR Sequels and Reboots always have a chance to appear much more antagonistic towards the original franchise, and thus the original fans than rival franchises and I think that people who develop/write/create them should always keep that in mind.
Usually when I look into like online discussion there’s always the whole aspect of how a sequel or even a reboot character is hated by the original fanbase, especially when they are made to ‘undermine’ or ‘take over’.
But at the same time there’s never really much hate, save for hate that is present for either that genre or that character by itself, when a character from a rival franchise tries to do the same.
Like for example, everyone knows about Dante and Bayonetta
While not explicitly rivals, they are both well known and often poster images for their genre of games. And while Dante and DMC don’t really do anything to poke fun or jab at Bayonetta, the latter does.
Often using names and even phrase, to even having Bayonetta use similar weapons but label them as the ‘joke’ weapons in her game. And I’m not saying that’s bad, it’s the kind of jab you would want to make and expect when producing a rival franchise (even if both of them like to tease that they’re in the same universe).
And for the most part, it’s taken as fun games between them.
The same can’t be said when DMC 4 first came out or god forbid DMC:DMC.
Nero got like a really bad hand (lmao) given to him when he was first introduce. He was made to be the new DMC protagonist, and like you’d expect from people who have played DMC and attached to Dante due to Dante being the face of the game/franchise for as long as it has existed, people did not like him.
While Nero wasn’t made specifically tom ock or belittle Dante, the fact that he was going to replace him was enough to make people feel upset or angry. Obviously opinions changed, and DMC V did him well alongside fellow newcomer V and he’s accepted to be either a Duotagonist or upcoming Protagonist since the developed him well.
Donte (I love that nickname) on the other hand, was NOT accepted before, during, and even after his game came out. Since he was made specifically to mock and try to make himself better than the current Dante. In addition to the horrible PR that was done, it’s obvious he’s not very well liked.
This is despite that the jabs he’d make towards DMC was, while not as funny or smart or subtle, like Bayonetta’s way of cheekily suggesting that Dante’s guns were inferior to her own, almost similar like the wig moment and other things that I honestly can’t give a shit to think about.
But because Donte’s game was made to replace Dante (At least that was the plan since it was a planned reboot), the comments didn’t flow as well and became more aggresive in context than they actually were.
TL:DR Anyways, what I’m saying is. Sequels and Reboots always have a chance to appear much more antagonistic towards the original franchise, and thus the original fans than rival franchises and I think that people who develop/write/create them should always keep that in mind.

So I feel like I accidentally added more plot to this than I meant and didn't explain quite as much as I wanted to, but I hope you enjoy it regardless ^^
I just feel like they should’ve gone with the reboot version only or the classic franchise only
But that’s some real not in a good way hybrid shit and I don’t know how to feel about it
I think Capcom is just too scared to lose reboot fans and classic ones so they returned with the old Dante and the new Dante named Nero
Made a Dante based off this DmC Concept Art:
Finally done with this little comic of 2Dante in DmC. :)
"What's wrong big guy? Need a hand... Or an arm?"
DmC Dante VS Orangguerra i made. 🙃
Yeah, his colour palette is not accurate to the game, i coloured him based on the concept art.
Gonna make a DMC2 Dante VS... one of the DmC bosses next. Not sure who yet... 🤷
