Assuming the appendix truly has no purpose and everyone surgically removed it (continuously for many many years). Would we eventually evolve to not being born with an Appendix? Or would it have to be genetically removed with gene splicing technology?
Unfortunately, no. Even if you removed everyone’s appendix for a whole generation (or more) babies would still be born with appendices because it is genetically coded. However, if we as a society only allowed people born without appendices to have children, we would very quickly evolve out the appendix.
Even removing the appendix with gene splicing is challenging. In order to remove it, the genetic code for the appendix structure would first have to be isolated. This may sound fairly easy, but when faced with over 3 billion base pairs, it becomes very difficult to determine what is responsible for what.
Genes in a bottle: grammar, codes, writing and spelling inside that little sphere called nucleus
Over an organism’s lifetime, its genome changes very little. What does change, constantly, are which proteins the cell produces in response to damage, changes in the environment, or stages in the reproductive cycle. The protein production is regulated by DNA-binding proteins that have evolved the ability to turn different genes on or off. Because the environment can change quickly, rapid…
Everything wrong with the claim that vaccines alter DNA... from a Uni student doing Bachelor of Science.
No anti-vaxx movement is without sin.
This post is going to be split into a few categories to make it easier to read - Causing DNA modifications and the implications of such and why would a vaccine want to modify your DNA.
Causing DNA modifications with vaccines
The process
Your body will not just take on DNA from foriegn cells, even if you're a baby. *ding
In fact, your body is more likely to attack or reject foreign cells instead of being assimilated by them. *ding
The only foreign bodies that are really capable of changing your DNA are viruses (which hijack your cells as a means of reproduction and are attacked by your immune system anyway) and prions. Some vaccines don't even contain viruses, for goodness sake! *ding
The implications of being able to modify DNA via the mere presence of human cells in vaccines.
If a few human cells injected into the muscle cause the DNA of the host body to take on the DNA, then what happens when pathogens or even non-pathogenic microorganisms enter the body? Does your body take on their DNA too? Shit, I'm gonna turn into bacteria! *ding
If this were at all possible, this would imply that the body would be able to accept donated blood and/or organs. Blood donations by blood type would not be a thing and people who get organ transplants would not have to take anti-rejection drugs. If a human body rejects an entire organ because it came from someone else, then why would it suddenly take on the DNA of a few human cells injected into the muscle via vaccine? *ding
Also if this were the case, this makes genetic modification many times easier. Think of the possibilities! Has someone got sickle cell anemia? Inject them with the blood of a healthy person and watch the blood cells get replaced with healthy ones. Someone got cancer? Inject healthy cells into the tumor and watch it kill itself. Five sins for that! *d-d-d-d-ding
Why on Earth would a vaccine need to modify your DNA?
Modifying DNA is not required to become immune to a disease. Sure, it is a method of becoming immune, but it isn't the ONLY method. Vaccines use the adaptive immune system method, where the immune system learns specialised techniques for fighting pathogens it has already come into contact with. Vaccines simply bypass the whole getting sick part of adaptive immunity by weakening the disease so your body can learn without it harming you. *ding
DNA-based immunity does have quite a few caveats. What if the DNA gets mutated? What if the genes that provide immunity to a certain disease leave you vulnerable to others? What if the genes achieve immunity by... fucking up one of organs to the point where the pathogen can't affect it anymore? *ding
And where the fuck are they getting DNA that renders you immune to the specific pathogens? At least by training your immune system to fight diseases by exploiting an ability that's already there, you don't have to look for and extract DNA that can render people immune to disease. *ding
*TOTAL SINS: 13
SENTENCE: DNA modification so this claim is no longer recognisable.
*This list is not exhaustive and is subject to change. It is not 100% perfect and I won't say it is. I am a mere fledgeling compared to actual scientists. If there is anything that I can add to this list, please tell me.
Maternal Smoking Epigenetically Harms Child Development
Maternal Smoking Epigenetically Harms Child Development
Thankfully, smoking is a habit all pregnant women are advised to break. But, surprisingly, this wasn’t always the case, especially in the 1940s and 1950s when doctors endorsed smoking in tobacco advertisements. Tobacco companies even ran ads hinting that pregnant women could smoke as a way to calm their nerves. With the influx of research on the harms of cigarettes, it now seems absurd…
Meet Mr Green Genes. The six-month-old cat was created by scientists who are trying to combat a range of diseases such as cystic fibrosis. They modified his DNA to see if a gene could be introduced harmlessly into an animal’s genetic sequence. To track where the gene went, they decided to use one that glowed under ultraviolet light.
Mutant Mosquito Can 'Resist Malaria,' But Will It Eradicate The Disease Entirely?
Mutant Mosquito Can ‘Resist Malaria,’ But Will It Eradicate The Disease Entirely?
Scientists with the University of California have created a unique breed of mosquito that is genetically built to “resist malaria.” The breakthrough has the potential to eliminate the deadly disease altogether. The New York Times reports that researchers have successfully bred a mutant mosquito with two distinct modifications that can stop the spread of malaria forever. The first modification was…
