I think there should really be more of a discussion about the uncomfortable origin of most typical Fantasy humanoid species, specifically DnD.
Orcs are always portrayed using stereotypes of real world racial minorities, made to be the bad guys in nearly every story involving them. It’s very common to see DnD stories where the plot is “All Orcs are evil!”, without anyone at the table or writing the story really thinking about the implications of that message.
Tolkein himself, the man who most worlds DnD and Fantasy Literature base their work off of, made his Orcs incredibly racially coded (because he was racist). I don’t want to quote any of the racist things he’s written, but if you’re interested please look it up in your own time.
Other DnD species that have similar racial coding, are Drows and Elves. Elves are very much White Coded (typically having extremely white or pale skin), while Drow have very dark skin. Drow are another evil species that’s racially coded, although not as much as Orcs are. It’s actually kind of rare to see Elves (who are 80% of the time good guys) have dark skin.
So anyways, what I’m saying here is.. I want to see more stories where Orcs are treated like just another group of people in the world, where the Heroes are both fighting and befriending Orcs. Maybe the Bar Keep’s an Orc, maybe the kindly old man who gives the Party clues to a Treasure in the mountains is an Orc. Maybe the shop keep’s an ex-adventurer Half-Orc Half-Elf.
Also, not all Elves have to be light skinned. Elves can have any skin colour. More POC Taako headcannons please.
Drow don’t have to be enemies, if you still want to play with the idea of the Underdark, maybe have NPCs who grew up there and have them discuss their experiences escaping from it? Maybe there’s Drow Rebels who want to change the Underdark for the better? Drow and Half-Drow who never grew up there?
The great thing about DnD is, you can change any part of the story to better suit you and your players, so you can absolutely take racist shit out of it.
