People often ask me how I got into tarot. The short answer? I found a tarot deck in my mom's closet when I was really young (like 10 or 11). She didn't want it, and actually was kind of scared of it, so somewhat reluctantly gave it to me to play with and I've LOVED it and treasured it since for reasons that are logically difficult to explain. Growing up in a predominately conservative part of middle america, I never thought this kitschy card game with a really secret history would be considered cool, but flash forward almost 15 years to me living in Brooklyn where tarot is in such a hot topic! And of course it's much more than cool, but it is cool. It's cool that we can have intensely deep conversations at loud public places at all hours with ourselves, with strangers, and with loved ones. It's cool that we can share as much or as little as we want in our readings, before, after and in-between. It's cool that we can develop philosophies based off of narrative structures and game theories where new age and modern spiritualism falls short. It's cool that tarot (and other forms of psychic entertainment like astrology) allows us to to test free will and question fate. What I'm trying to say here is that tarot is no longer a private practice: it no longer has to be. Time and time again, I realize how important tarot is, whether I'm reading cards at a party or with a client over the phone. Whether we are strategizing a move or a break up, we're figuring out how to more mindfully shape our worlds using the resources we have to grow and expand in the most sustainable and thoughtful way.
