“ alex! alex, just listen to me— ” she was too high-strung, too panicky to keep from shouting at him down the empty hallway. at least, she hoped that it was empty. he was angry at her and he was right to be. izzy had been lying right under his nose and the fact that she still was only added insult to injury. but that was what an addict did; they lied. she couldn’t stop lying. chasing after him, she made it a few steps behind him before saying, “ I swear, they were confiscated from a patient. I’m not stealing drugs, alex. ”
“I don’t have to listen to anything! I don’t have to listen to any of your crap ever again.” He knew he was shouting too loudly for them to be in the middle of the hospital, but she’d started it. He couldn’t help but let his temper get away from him. If he hadn’t grown up like he had maybe he would have had a mind to realize she needed help and not someone yelling at her in her place of work, but he’d grown up around addicts. His father had been one and all of his friends had been too. He’d somehow convinced himself that Izzy was different. Because even if she had a problem, she was still her. She wasn’t abusive and she wasn’t manipulative and she wasn’t a liar. He’d been wrong. He turned to walk away from her, intent on stomping his way right out of her life, but he whirled back around when she swore to him that she wasn’t a thief on top of everything else. She swore. “Do you really think I’m that stupid?”
