We can almost count on our eyesight to fail with age, maybe even past the point of correction. It’s a pretty big flaw if you ask us. So, how can a person with aging eyes hope to continue reading the printed word? There are plenty of commercial document readers available that convert text to speech, but they’re expensive. Most require a smart phone and/or an internet connection. That might not be as big of an issue for future generations of failing eyes, but we’re not there yet. Does anyone know of any text-to-speech voices/programs that are more autistic/spd friendly? I just downloaded a reader app and the voices feel like fingers on a chalkboard in my ears. They're very grainy.

I do not know of any specifically. Most of them do not sound like natural speech to me, though I know that you can get a lot of different voices for Microsoft text to speech - or you used to be able to at least, I haven’t tried it since Windows XP.

I guess the question becomes what sort of reader do you need? Do you just need to read PDF files, word documents, etc., for longer content? Or do you need a screen reader? There are softwares like Talks&Zooms and JAWS that will do screen reading, but I don’t know if these are screen readers document readers. Talks at least claims to be close to natural language.

The blind community might be able to give you more advice on natural language readers, and searching natural language document readers or screen readers on Google might give you specific softwares to try. A lot of the higher end ones allow you to adjust the tone, pitch, and speed of any of the voices that they have.
