"In the Middle" music video: a rough interpretation

A banged-out analysis of dodie's new video:

Everything that happens is actually in the memory/imagination of the older woman in pink (the bride is her past self), hence why the fashion is so outdated and, even though it's supposedly a wedding, there aren't any guests - she doesn't remember who the guests were, all she remembers (or at least all that's important to the memory) is her husband and the awkward dance and the awkward band and the tacky decorations.

So she's remembering her first dance with her husband and in her mind it's a pretty uncomfortable affair: not only do neither of them seem to be into it but they're both more interested in the singer than each other. Then halfway through the song we see the woman take a bite out of a slice of cake and immediately the scene changes - instead of getting up for their dance the couple seem to have a silent agreement, they get up and follow the singer through a portal. As established the closing monologue, eating cake here is a metaphor for taking a chance. The moment she takes that bite we go from here memory to her imagination, and what she imagines is her and her husband taking the chance she wishes they'd taken, and subsequently follow the singer off into an alternate universe where they didn't follow the same path so their ending is different.

But of course it's just imagination, she never did take that chance, and so she's left behind in the real world wishing she'd accepted the cake (I think the monologue at the end is supposed to be her - opportunities are rare, don't let them pass by like she did).

I'm not sure what the scrapbook in the middle of supposed to be about, or of the singer is symbolic of something specific, but the whole thing is about regretting not taking a shot that should have been taken.
