Overall opinion:

okay I really love Foxtrot. I feel like it’s got a clarity? to it (I guess that’s the best word) that Nursery Cryme and to some extent Selling England lack. Like, Tony’s mellotron work on those two albums, especially Nursery Cryme is very atmospheric, it almost get’s kind of muddled (not in a bad way, though! In a beautiful way! It’s kind of like a foggy forest and your mind just kind of gets lost in it at times, which I think was the intent) but in Foxtrot everything is very clear, and even in bits like the last half of Supper’s Ready where there’s a TON going on you can still distinguish the individual voices relatively easily. I guess it’s got more of a late classical feel to it than a romantic feel.

Also I think Foxtrot is the album where it’s most apparent that Genesis is a band of storytellers, like every song has a very obvious narrative and they make a lot of use of musical cues to create a world, if that makes any sense. Every time I listen to the album with my dad he ends up saying something comparing Peter to a medieval troubadour and I agree whole-heartedly.
