A Little Night Music
Is the Pied Piper of Hamlin a dark story or a hopeful story to you? I thought it a very dark story before I had babies-- after babies, I find that I want to change the sinister quality of the tale by telling it from the point of view of the children in the story. Told without fear, it might be a fable about exploring the mysteries of life. To express that, I used the objects that Violet first endowed with an affection normally reserved for sentient creatures-- her “loveys” and stuffed animal friends. Here goes Violet and all of her favorites, dancing under a Swiss cheese moon-and-stars to the magical tune of her piping. This is still one my favorite scenes.

Violet's Circus
If Violet wants to run away with the circus (whatever a futuristic circus will look like) when she’s of age, I will be sad but also secretly proud and in awe of her. It seems like a truism to say to children, “You can do anything you want, anything you set your heart to.” I’ve seen the heart of my child and it roars. (A small roar, to be sure, but she already has a head start on my own timid ways). So in her case, she really will do what she wants to do. This is the first time we included Bunni Pinkerton as another character in our scenes. Bunni is as feckless and playful as Dogdor is faithful and watchful.
